GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Doctors at the Gaza Strip's main hospital said Tuesday they are struggling to deal with the wounded from the latest outburst of Palestinian infighting — as well as their own trauma from being dragged into the conflict.
Shifa Hospital, with 600 beds and six operating rooms, admitted most of the 500 people who were wounded in last week's fighting between the rival Fatah and Hamas movements.
At least 200 of the patients were treated for bullet wounds to the knee cap and lower limbs, with many amputations, said Dr. Loui al-Khalidi, a surgeon at the hospital.
"I had wished for some of them to die. It is such a shame to live with such a defect inflicted by their own people," al-Khalidi said.
Doctors said the shortage of supplies at the hospital, such as antibiotics and painkillers, is not unusual. During past Israeli incursions and Palestinian-Israeli fighting, Shifa would at times be swamped with patients, with many lying on the floors and in corridors.
