Ahmadinejad in Auschwitz?
Edited on Fri Feb-17-06 01:52 PM by eyl
Good for them.

A Muslim cultural institute in Germany on Monday criticised Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for disparaging the Holocaust, daring him to visit the Auschwitz concentration camp.

"In this place of horror he can again deny the Holocaust, if he has the courage," a spokesman for the Islam-Archiv-Deutschland Central Institute told the German Catholic press agency KNA.

In recent statements, the hardline Iranian president has dismissed the Nazis’ systematic slaughter of mainland Europe’s Jews as a "myth" used to justify the creation of Israel and called for the state to be "wiped off the map".

By denying the Holocaust, Ahmadinejad not only denigrated the Jewish victims of the genocide but also the 200,000 Roms and Arabs murdered in the "gypsy camp" of Auschwitz-Birkenau and other camps, the institute spokesman said.

3. About that last paragraph...
The first entry was said to be from renowned Australian cartoonist Michael Leunig, according to the website organising the competition with Iran’s biggest-selling newspaper Hamshahri.

Both Leunig and the organisers were the victims of a hoax. Someone from the Chaser sent it...

Chaser writer sorry for Leunig stunt

The man who sent a Michael Leunig cartoon to an Iranian newspaper has said he regrets the stunt.

Freelance journalist Richard Cooke, who contributes to The Chaser website, has taken responsibility for entering the Holocaust cartoon in a contest run by Iran's biggest selling newspaper, Hamshahri.

Mr Cooke, 26, said he could not "give a good answer" as to why he impersonated the cartoonist.

"If I had gotten a second opinion I probably wouldn't have done something so stupid," he told The Age.

He admitted sending the Iranian newspaper a link to ABC's Media Watch website, which carries an image of the cartoon, and a note purporting to be from Leunig.

5. No, no, no. It's heaps wittier than the Onion!
The Chaser got a lot of attention this past week...

AWB inquiry not laughing over 'The Chaser' stunt

The lawyer for an AWB executive giving evidence at the Cole inquiry has asked for protection for his client after an incident outside the inquiry involving satirical television program The Chaser.

The lawyer for AWB executive Charles Stott told the inquiry that during the lunch break someone had thrust himself in front of the television cameras asking Mr Stott to sign a large cheque to be sent to Saddam Hussein.

He said it was intimidation of his client and should not be tolerated.

The lawyer asked Commissioner Terence Cole for protection for the witness to and from the inquiry and to consider whether the incident was contempt.

Commissioner Cole says the matter was serious and a witness should never be threatened.

He asked the lawyer to gather statements from witnesses so the matter could be referred to the Australian Federal Police for further investigation.

Mind you, the Cole inquiry is heaps funnier than anything else going on currently, even though it's not intending to be humourous...
