GUNS IN THE NEWS--September 16, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Police: Driver Draws Gun In Road-Rage Incident (MI)
"An armed driver is apparently at large after an incident on a local freeway Wednesday morning.
Romulus police say a man driving westbound on Interstate 94 near Wayne Road pointed a handgun at another driver and threatened to shoot him.
Police believe it was a case of road rage and the two drivers may have been involved in a dispute before the gun was drawn."

2. Student Faces Expulsion For Bringing Gun To School (OH)
"DAYTON, Ohio -- A 10-year-old Dayton student may be expelled after he reportedly brought a revolver to school on Monday. The incident happened at Loos Elementary after fellow students reported the gun to teachers, who found the gun inside the fifth-grader's backpack.
Dayton school Superintendent Percy Mack said the gun was not loaded and it was brought to school not for malicious purpose, but to show to other students.
One parent who has a sixth- and first-grader in the school said she wishes the school would have notified parents with at least a letter."

By the way, what right wing extremist lobbying group with racist lunatic Ted Nugent on its board publishes a gun magazine for kids?

13. Only a revolver?, I guess that could be considered improvement.

I'm sure that if hed a read that kids-NRA mag, he would have brought something bigger, I mean, the magazine would have pointed out to him that a tinky revolver wouldnt be too good in gunning down the class.

"It was quickly determined that methamphetamine had been cooked in the house," the release stated.
After ventilating the fumes, deputies discovered numerous items inside used in "cooking" the drug, including glassware, chemicals and other items, the release stated.
Several grams of powdered methamphetamine, and several rifles and pistols were confiscated from the house, the report stated. One of the rifles had a high-capacity ammunition holder, Lt. Pete Cooper said Wednesday. "

4. Abrams's Stance on Guns Criticized (MD)
"Montgomery County Democrats are hoping to make Stephen N. Abrams's position on gun control an issue in this fall's campaign for a seat on the school board.
Abrams, the chairman of the Montgomery County Republican Party, angered Democrats this spring when he sent a letter to several legislators opposing their efforts to enact a statewide ban on the sale of assault weapons. The letter said the legislators should have more important things to worry about than pushing for the ban.
Abrams is running for the Montgomery County Board of Education District 2 seat, representing Rockville and Potomac, against incumbent Walter Lange. But while school board races rarely center on state or national issues and are supposed to be nonpartisan, Democrats are starting to remind voters of Abrams's letter.
This week, Del. William A. Bronrott (D-Montgomery) cited the letter during a rally to protest Congress's decision not to renew the federal assault weapons ban. "

5. Dead ID'd in Parsons shooting (KS)
"Parsons police on Wednesday released the names of three of four people killed in a homicide-suicide discovered Tuesday.
Police said the dead are Cynthia Helms, about 40; her daughter, Diane Helms, in her early 20s; Cynthia Helms' 13-year-old son, whom authorities declined to name because he was juvenile; and Christopher Samples, about 21. A relative, however, said Samples was 19.
Three of the four were homicide victims with gunshot wounds, and the fourth person appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. Police have yet to say who is suspected of shooting the others.
A police officer found the bodies after authorities were asked to check on the welfare of Cynthia Helms, who had not shown up to work Tuesday. Police found the bodies about 8:30 a.m."

8. 15-year-old shot during robbery dies at hospital (MD)
A boy who was shot during a robbery Monday night on a street in West Baltimore died Tuesday afternoon at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, city police reported yesterday.
The victim, Christopher Richardson, 15, was standing in front of a house in the 2800 block of W. North Ave. about 10 p.m. Monday with a girl he knew when an unknown gunman demanded his money, witnesses told homicide Detective Michael Johnson.
A fight broke out between Richardson and the gunman, Johnson said, and the boy was shot several times in the head with a small-caliber handgun and fell to the pavement.
Johnson said witnesses reported seeing the gunman back away after Richardson was shot, then reach into the boy's pockets and remove an unknown sum of money before fleeing. "

10. Man Faces Shooting Charges; No Arrests Made In 2 Other Incidents (CT)
"City police investigating three shootings Tuesday and early Wednesday in Hartford arrested a man they say shot another man sitting in a car on Seyms Street.
Of the three victims, Tyshawn Coleman, 15, of High Court in East Hartford, suffered the most serious injury, police said. He was shot in the left shoulder during a drive-by shooting at about 5 p.m. Tuesday in the Northeast neighborhood, they said. They said Coleman was riding in the front seat of a car on Mansfield Street when a bullet hit him in the shoulder and apparently pierced an artery.
In the second shooting, police said Gregory Hopkins, 17, of High Court in East Hartford, showed up at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday with a gunshot wound in the hand.
Police say they solved the third shooting after a tipster led them to Miguel Rivera, 19, of Willard Street in Hartford, who confessed to shooting Charles Carter, 42, early Wednesday morning on Seyms Street."

11. Suspect in fatal shooting arrested (MS)
Wonder if he'll claim self-defense....

"A West Carrollton man wanted in a fatal shooting Monday night was arrested Tuesday in Carroll County, Miss.
Travis Becker, 28, is accused in the slaying of Mark L. Shockey, 42, of 203 W. Circle Drive, who was found shot in the head on Smith Street in West Carrollton. After a chase lasting until early Tuesday failed to turn up the suspect, West Carrollton police issued a national alert for Becker's arrest on a probation violation, Chief Richard Barnhart said.

I myself wonder why anybody even pretending to be a Democrat would waste time with anything calling itself the "righter"...or would have been dredging in those cesspools to start with. But maybe that's obvious.

26. Robbery looks like group's 3rd in 2 weeks (TX)
"BEDFORD - Late-night bandits -- one armed with what witnesses described as an automatic handgun -- robbed a convenience store Tuesday, increasing to three the number of heists that investigators believe were committed by the group in the past two weeks.
Witnesses pursued the robbers into an apartment complex late Tuesday but stopped when one of the men pointed the gun at them, police said Wednesday.
Bedford police said they believe that the robbers who hit Minit Market Tuesday night are the same ones who hit the La Quinta Inn at 1450 Airport Freeway on Sept. 2 and Viva Food Store at 1305 Brown Trail on Sept. 5.
At each robbery, three or four men used one handgun to rob clerks and managers. The robbers wore masks in the La Quinta and Viva holdups but not at the Minit Market robbery."
