Poll question: Can You truly Identify the High Performance
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 02:56 PM by lunabush
Automobile?

Recent postings here in the gungeon indicate some folks seem to think we should ban or restrict in some manner (more than we already have inflicted the government into) my personal right to own and run the car I desire, I wondered, do this auto-grabbing asswipes even have a clue as to what it is they seek to ban?

Do you know a high performance car when you see one, or are you simply terrified by "scary" looking cosmetics? Do Chrome wheels and aerodynamics frighten you? Is your phobia of speed so extreme that you break out into a sweat when you see a spoiler?

Well, see if you can spot the high performance vehicle and then when I tell you which is which, decide if your prejudices are real or part of your paranoia.

This Ford? #1

or this Ford?

3. I'll say.
I think they should both be banned. A regular person obviously has no need for either one of them.

There are more, but you get the idea

6. Assault vehicle specifications.
which cosmetic features make a regular car an assault car again?

They are as follows:

- Retractable seat belt (encourages people to speed with impunity).
- Sun visor (protects the driver from being blinded while driving).
- Fuel tank that holds more than ten gallons (criminals with unlimited fuel tanks are a menace).
- Fittings on the front end for a snow plow.
- 120 mm tank cannon.
- Muffler for silent operation.

11. alright, blatant sexism
I don't have a clue and don't want to have a clue. Don't make me know. I don't want to. Bad enough I know about soccer when I never ever wanted to. Thank the dogs I've managed to avoid knowing anything at all about football.

I promise never to be prejudiced against any car, since I insist on remaining totally clueless about them. I promise not to judge any cars by the person driving them, either, even though I can easily judge the people in question by listening for the presence or absence of bass sounds emanating from the car and checking to see how many tailpipes are sticking out of it. Even if I determine that some humongous proportion of the cars whose drivers are hurling noxious sound waves at my eardrums and innards belong to class "X", I'll never ever even imagine that eliminating that class of cars from the marketplace, or eliminating the problematic cosmetic accoutrements of the cars, would have a salutory (is it salutory or salutary? the latter, I guess) effect on the behaviour of the people who are at present wont to drive them. No, they'd just put a passenger in the back seat with a synthesizer and a chainsaw, and make the same noise a different way. I know.

Okay?

17. Shelby ... drool, grovel, grovel - gimme
I want one.

A cutch pedal so stiff you need two feet to depress it and a start from the line so quick you'll leave your glasses in the back seat.

Clearly an assault vehicle no one "needs".

But damn they am fun.

31. Once upon a time ...
Way back in the day (1968 - 1971) I made regular trips between Chicago and the corporate office in Milwaukee.

One time my car was out of order. (Happens a lot when you drive a Triumph TR-3!)

The people at the office told me to just "rent a car" so the local Hertz guy had a Shelby GT350H (Black with gold stripes, if I recall) that the damned fool rented me for the trip on two separate occasions.

Made record time with that car going from point A to point B and back again.

Hard to drive smoothly, but damn the adrenalin when you hit the loud pedal!!!! If I had died, it would have taken the undertaker two week just to get the smile off my face.

It was the belt fed, full auto, 50 caliber version of a car. (Had to get back to guns somehow don't we?)

Besides every one knows that high performance cars are only for men with small penis...but that doesnt stop the scummy auto industry from marketing to them.

spreading it on thick, there. You granola crunchers spread that crap about small penis' all the time but I know a short pants wearing pee wee like you would be whizzing down to your birkenstocks when I take my Shelby GT into a hairpin curve at 70 MPH. Detroit makes nothing worthwhile - you and all your liebral pols have gotten to them and now they have all that safety and emissions crap and whats with that 20 MPG crap? THAT infringes on my right to speed. Nope, me, I go for the pre-emissions control vehicles - a little more expensive - but strictly legal if purchased before the legislation.

23. Got that right, man, My girlfriend wouldn't drive, wouldn't come
near a car - until I took her out to the old airport on street stock day. Oh, man, she couldn't get enough of it - my car...

Now she drives her own Cougar. Not my choice, no doubt, but man, she is all over that thing.

And she feels more secure knowing that we have the car to get home - we don't have to take the bus. Sometimes when we are out, she'll say, "where's Shane?" (that's out little nickname for my Shelby) and I'll jangle the keys on my leather fob attached to my belt and she gets a real relaxed look. She really appreciates the security of having her own ride, and the feeling of security her man brings her by carrying his keys.

Neither car looks stock. More than likely the Shelby or fake Shelby has a small block V8 and the Capri probably has a 2.8L V6, but either could be 4 cylinders for all we know from the pictures.

Wasn't that the roiginal spec for the GT 350?

I thought they put some 351 "Clevelands" in them later and the GT 500 was the 427 side oiler wasn't it?

No matter how you look at it they were cruel, savage beasts you had to admire.

Hubba, hubba.

Went to the local Cruise Night last evening and got a double dose of muscle and lead sleds.

37. I don't think so, but ???
The 428 Cobrajet, usually with Ram induction, was used in some of the bigger street Fords, Fairlanes, etc.

IIRC, the 428CJ was a very different and less potent engine than the 427 that had a shorter stroke and better "breathing" potential with modifications like a hi-rise Offie Tarantula Manifold and a nice big-ass Holley or two with the secondaries drilled out to make the carb the size of an an oversize sewer pipe for gas and air ... if my aging memory serves me.

Very, very, VERY environmentally incorrect, making a Hummer look like a high mileage car by comparison.

That's why Carroll Shelby and the Nascar Ford teams opted for the 427, but the 428 was certainly no slouch on the street. For an off the shelf ready-to-race engine neither was all that shabby.

38. Actually a point could be made that both these Ford psuedo sports cars
share a lot of bad design characteristics that make them unsafe. Poor visibilty, poor weight distribution, poor quality control, bad seats........Long story short, they're no BMW's. The Nanny state might be right to take them off the road. Japan coerces it's population into trading their cars with a rigorous insprction program. There are a lot of poorly modified and poorly maintained cars on America's roads.

39. I own a car....
but am not opposed to reasonable restrictions on cars. Who needs a car that can go over 15 MPH? Who needs a car in a color other than black? Who needs an air conditioned car, or a muffled car? Muffled cars just make it easier for drunk drivers to sneak up on people to kill them.

When the Right to Keep and Drive cars was passed, the only cars were Model Ts. Therefore, people who insist that they have a right to own cars should buy a Model T, and all other cars should be banned.

Who will forever think that a 4 cyl anything with a turbo and a trick paint job is a hot car. Add a $6,000.00 or so sound system and it's the "rod" of their dreams.

So sad that they'll likely never know the joy of a big block that rumbles like a volcano immediately prior to eruption. Something along the line of a 'cuda with twin 4 bbls on a 383. Who cared that it got crap mileage when gas only cost .29 per gallon at the pumps - often dipping below .20 during frequent gas wars? Hooker headers - Holley carbs, Hearst shifters - AH AH AH AH MORE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!
