GUNS IN THE NEWS--May 10. 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. 'Daily Show' will make fun of Arizona bill
The good news: The Legislature's bill to allow guns in bars and nightclubs is about to enter the national spotlight.
The not-so-good news, at least for Rep. Randy Graf and other sponsors of Senate Bill 1210: It will be the Daily Show with Jon Stewart shining that spotlight.
A crew from Comedy Central's hilarious mock news program flew in from New York City this week to interview Graf, R-Green Valley, and House Minority Leader John Loredo, D-Phoenix, a vocal critic of the bill.
Loredo said he told Helms that rational Arizonans don't want guns in bars.
"Sounds to me like you're kowtowing to rational people," accused Helms."

Heekin suspect back on streets

By RICK YENCER
[email protected]

MUNCIE -
David D. Hanyard, accused of shooting and killing Ralph D. Book in Heekin Park on Saturday night, bonded out of the Delaware County Jail before noon Sunday.

Police charged Hanyard, 29, with preliminary counts of voluntary manslaughter and aggravated battery, both felonies. He was held in jail less than 12 hours before posting a $50,000 bond. And jail records show that Hanyard had been there six other times since 1994 on various charges.

<snip>

Book, 24, was pronounced dead at Ball Memorial Hospital at 6:12 p.m. Saturday with one gunshot wound in the chest.

He and Hanyard had been fighting, and both had guns, according to police. As Book physically overcame Hanyard, the suspect shot Book and his brother, Datreon Book, who then shot Hanyard, police said.

Students Return To School After Md. H.S. Shooting

Randallstown Students, Staff Coping With After-School Shooting

POSTED: 7:11 a.m. EDT May 10, 2004
UPDATED: 7:40 a.m. EDT May 10, 2004

RANDALLSTOWN, Md. --
It's back to school Monday morning for the first time since four kids were shot Friday at Randallstown High School.

School officials said counselors will be available to help students and police will be on patrol in and around the school.

Not long after a charity basketball game on Friday afternoon, four students were shot in the parking lot of Randallstown High School. Police said an argument between Matthew McCullough, 17, and someone else earlier in the week sparked a fight that escalated into a multiple shooting.

Police said the suspects started shooting indiscriminately in the crowd and they believe McCullough -- a student at the school -- was one of the triggermen. McCullough turned himself in to Baltimore County police Sunday after two days on the run.

21. Oddly enough...
the problems with hooliganism (largely solved now, although there are rare outbreaks) were in the late '70s through to the early '90s.

The worst offences were pre-1989... a period in which the hooligans could have easily purchased handguns and semi-automatic rifles legally if they had so desired.

Yet, no one ever got shot during all those years of violence... this is despite it being organised, pre-arranged riots between rival hooligan 'firms'.

I think partly this is down to the total absence of a gun culture in the UK, and partly down to bravado (guns are for wimps who can't fight like men etc).

14. Defense Says It Was Suicide, Prosecutors Call It Murder (NY)
"RIVERHEAD, N.Y. -- When Wendy Rose was found in her bed with a gunshot wound to her head, police initially had no reason to doubt her husband's story that the woman, despondent and hallucinating, had tried to commit suicide.
But after she died the following day at Stony Brook University Hospital -- without ever regaining consciousness -- an autopsy found Rose not only had a gunshot wound to her head, but appeared to have a "graze wound" on the other side of her head, as well as a bullet wound in her back.
Eric Rose, 46, of Hauppauge, was then charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the death of his 53-year-old wife. Opening statements in his trial were expected to get under way Monday in Suffolk County Court before Judge Gary Weber. If convicted, Rose could be sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. He has been held without bail since his October 2002 arrest."

GROVELBOT.EXE v2.0
==================

The time now is 9:50:14PM EDT, Monday, May 10, 2004.

There are exactly...
6 days,
2 hours,
9 minutes, and
46 seconds left in our fund drive.

This website could not survive without your generosity. Member donations
pay for more than 84% of the Democratic Underground budget. Don't let
GrovelBot become the next victim of the Bush economy. Bzzzt.

Please take a moment to donate to DU right now. Thank you for your support.
