Machine pistol (MAC-10) found in San Diego Children's Pool
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/08/11/state/n072324D95.DTL

San Diego police say a machine pistol and several rounds of ammunition have been found in Children's Pool beach in La Jolla.

Detective Gary Hassen told the San Diego Union-Tribune ( http://bit.ly/oTH0hQ) that someone walking along the seawall on Tuesday spotted the high-powered MAC-10 in about 2 to 3 feet of water and notified a lifeguard.

Hassen says a police diver recovered the unloaded weapon and 44 assorted bullets of different calibers.

The detective says it does not appear the gun had been in the water very long.

1. What a shameful way to treat a great weapon!
Someone needs an NRA training class.

20.  Our tunnel rats loved the one I "liberated" from a passing Green Beanie unit.
With the suppressor attached it was a little long, but the suppressor saved a lot of hearing problems. And the rate of fire, in a close area, was tremendous!

What is wrong with having a cop wade out and pick it up?

8. Good -- toss them all into swimming pools.
A little temporarily increased chances of shooting deaths at the pools would be more than offset by getting rid of the guns in the long term. ;-)

17. umm
if it is in the water, it is not likely to fire. If it is unloaded it will not fire, so the chances of shooting deaths would be zero. But the pile may decrease drownings.

12. If it is a full auto Mac 10 these things I know
it is illegal in California
I seriously doubt it was registered to anyone
no one bought it at Wal Mart.
that with the ammo of various calibers, I am guessing it is a ditched crime gun.

What is your point?

This is the Pacific Ocean. Someone threw a gun (and various ammunition) into the ocean.

28. Sounds like a frightening escalation in the decade-long battle between the
seals and the children. If the seals now have machine pistols, I sure hope those Fisher-Price anti-pinniped homing torpedoes arrive soon. For the children, don't ya know... :scared:

19. Strange report (mostly unreadable due to self-advertisement):

"Hassen says a police diver recovered the unloaded weapon and 44 assorted bullets of different calibers."

Maybe that's why they threw it away -- using several calibers would have jammed it up. I sure wouldn't want to shoot it.

This is an ocean beach. I'm sure in addition to the gun and various ammunition bits, they probably turned up a bunch of beer cans as well.

24. Natively, the mac 10 was intended to shoot the .45acp...
but it also, less frequently, came in 9mm and kits exist to convert any MAC 10 to 9mm, 45acp, or 22lr. Unfortunately it's younger brother, the Mac 11/9, only came in 9mm so it can only be converted to .22lr with aftermarket parts. However, the advantage of not being the size/weight of a brick and shooting ammo twice as expensive makes the the tradeoff worth it.

25. Just fyi, children do not swim in "Children's Pool",
Harbor seals do. It is the home of many seals, nobody swims there. The seawall is on the left side of this pic, it is used by many visitors to watch the seals. You can see the seals on the beach.

36. It was likely
deemed a crime scene..photos..they probably wouldn't have found the ammo without goggles. There is a beach patrol station at the beginning of the seawall, they keep a close eye on the seals.

44. Crap! This means that the local wildlife
has finally mastered machining and automatic weapons. I've long been without much pity for pinnipeds and cetaceans, figuring that, well, they've had just as much time as we have to figure out firearms and RPGs... Looks like the next season of Whale Wars will be worth watching for more than just Paul Watson's histrionics.

32. and who is surprised at your own vilely false allegation?
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/08/11/state/n072324D95.DTL

-- Link posted in OP.

"Machine pistol found in San Diego Children's Pool"

-- Headline of newspaper article found at that link.

"San Diego police say a machine pistol and several rounds of ammunition have been found in Children's Pool beach in La Jolla."

-- First paragraph of article, quoted in OP.

When one reads the headline, one notices that the words "pistol" and "found" are not capitalized, while the words "Children's Pool" are. This suggests that "Children's Pool" is a proper noun, a title, the name of a beach.

I missed it myself, I was just too anxious to be facetious.

By this point, I don't know how you could possibly have missed it.

So I can only think of a couple of words to use to characterize your 100% false allegation that ANYONE was either being misleading or "perpetuating" any misleading by anyone else.
