PA Rural County (Somerset) 80 Women sign up for handgun class
Edited on Sun May-22-11 12:53 AM by RamboLiberal
Eighty women signed up for a class on how to safely handle handguns this weekend.

The sheriff’s office held one class Saturday and another one will be held today. They ranged from ages 18 to 80.

-----

“There was tremendous interest in this class from the women of the county. There are women who have hand gun carrying permits, but have never learned to safely use them,” Mankey said.

The same class was held in October and drew a waiting list.

I know the deputy helping at the class quoted about how he wished the women had bought better guns. Good man. He's not only a deputy but martial arts master.

Since in PA no requirement for classes for a CCW, nice to see a county sheriff holding a class for the ladies.

Now maybe he ought to hold one for the guys. I've seen many at range who could use a class.

1. This is what the NRA use to do.
Provide safety and training classes. Now all they do is push the purchase of guns.

11. That would mean *actually going to, and reading* the NRA website.
They might steal his soul!

Well, maybe not- apparently they've been busy suborning ABC, CBS News, and the Arizona Star, according to another poster.

So it's probably safe to do so...

5. The NRA never stopped safety and training classes ...
The NRA is not quite the same as the NRA-ILA which is the political wing of the organization.

At this link is a list of NRA programs. Notice there is nothing about politics on the page
http://www.nra.org/programs.aspx

This link shows the NRA-ILA page. Notice that there is nothing about shooting classes or other services that were listed on the NRA page.
http://www.nraila.org/

If you are an NRA member, only a small portion of your dues goes to the NRA-ILA.

NRA, ILA And The NRA Political Victory Fund
.
The Institute receives some funding from NRA member dues, but its main source of revenue is derived from member contributions designated for legislative activity. ILA is not associated with any firearms or ammunition manufacturers. emphasis added

All NRA members know the benefits they receive from being part of the pre-eminent grassroots lobbying organization in America. At the same time, many are unaware of some of the important regulations and restrictions that govern NRA’s legislative and political activities, particularly those relating to the segregated nature of fund-raising activities.

The fund-raising that sustains NRA’s legislative activities is conducted by ILA. Federal and many state election laws dictate that funds used to assist candidates for office must be raised separately, and that is the task of NRA’s political action committee—the NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF). Neither NRA member dues nor contributions to ILA can be used directly for the election or defeat of candidates.emphasis added

Because of these clearly defined parameters, and because only a small fraction of ILA’s operating budget comes from regular NRA membership dues, both ILA and NRA-PVF must continuously raise the funds needed to sustain NRA’s legislative and political activities. The resources expended in these arenas come from the generous contributions of NRA members—above and beyond their regular dues.

4. Interesting how you got sent urban bigotry by the second post.
Facsinating, the kinds of predjudice that seem to be allowed in certain segments of D.U.

9. We need to see classes such as this all over our nation ...
Many women consider getting a firearm for self defense but lack the knowledge of firearms necessary to know what to buy, how to safely handle a firearm and how to properly clean and maintain a weapon. Other women already own a firearm but have little training or experience with their weapon and need training to become at least somewhat proficient with their weapon so that they can use it effectively if necessary.

Such courses offer an excellent opportunity for women to learn the basics and to become safe and responsible gun owners. I'm all for such training.

10. I spent this weekend helping move and giving a course to a friend of my wife..
She and her husband have a nasty divorce in the works, with claims, counter-claims, a protective order, and acrimony abounding.

My wife and I spent Friday helping her pack her things to move into a hotel while she finds a condo. Once we got the bulk of her things into a storage unit, we spent the rest of the weekend at my place and the gun range.

Saturday was 1/2 day class, 1/2 day blue gun / empty gun handling. This morning we met up at the range, and she started out with my buckmark 22. She worked her way up to the glock she bought a couple of weeks ago when her soon-to-be-ex-husband smashed a door in her face, cracking her cheekbone and eye socket.

I've done probably six classes in the last year- two women and five men. (Three of the men were a gay couple and their straight friend who've all had at least one run-in with homophobic assholes.)
