Thirteen men, most of them convicted felons, have been indicted in federal court here as part of a renewed effort to crack down on illegal firearms under "Project Safe Neighborhoods," a $500 million Justice Department program.
The project, announced two weeks ago by U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan, combines increased federal prosecutions for gun crimes with a community outreach effort and money for research to track where gun violence is occurring in the region.
Buchanan said the 13 indictments are the first wave of gun prosecutions by her office and more are coming.
"While the number of indictments is significant," she said, "they represent only the beginning of our efforts to prosecute felons who unlawfully possess firearms or carry firearms while committing federal crimes of violence or drug trafficking offenses."
