Outlaw Star is an anime series. The antagonists use Tao magic. The only reliable way to combat them is to use guns like the one pictured, which fire cartridges imbued with Tao magic spells.

Now that I've cemented my status as an irredeemable nerd, I may as well explain further; The cartridges come in 20 numbered varieties, each with different effects. Numbers 4, 9 and 13 will kill you if you fire too many in rapid succession.
