Idaho bill would OK campus guns - including at games

BOISE - Idaho would forbid its colleges and universities from banning guns on campus - including at football games - under legislation now pending in a House committee.

“The right to keep and bear arms is guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the Idaho Constitution,” Rep. Erik Simpson, R-moran-Idaho Falls, told the House State Affairs Committee on Wednesday. “I believe that the Legislature never intended for universities and colleges to institute firearms bans.”

Under current Idaho law, colleges and universities can decide on their own how to regulate firearms; most ban them, except for law enforcement officers. Simpson’s bill, HB 222, would remove that authority from colleges and universities except for undergraduate dormitories, where guns still could be banned.

The bill drew opposition Wednesday from law enforcement and university officials, and prompted this comment from Rep. Carlos Bilbao, R-Emmett, who said he attends all the home basketball and football games at Boise State University: “I don’t want to sit next to someone that’s carrying a gun.”

1. awesome, I predict over the next 2 to 3 years several states
will pass CCW on campus, then there will be a pause for several years, then the more timid states will notice that not only did nothing bad happen but these schools didn't have school shootings, so another group of states will pass CCW on campus, then another pause and then another wave of states will pass these laws, just like with shall-issue CHL laws. Meanwhile california will become shall issue.

People aren't stupid, they quickly being to realize the true "common sense" gun control is shall-issue CHL, including allowing CHL holders on campuses and I suggest allowing soldiers with CHL on bases to carry.

3. Colorado...where "blood is flowing in the streets", according to some.
I was just in CO for 3 days this week.

I didn't see a drop of blood.

Or a gun.

4. Article answers a question for me
"Under current Idaho law, colleges and universities can decide on their own how to regulate firearms; most ban them, except for law enforcement officers. List of restricted areas to concealed carry: You may not carry a concealed weapon in a courthouse, juvenile detention facility, adult correctional facility, prison, jail, public school or private school.

I have been wondering what the legal definition of "school" was in Idaho and it appears to only apply to K-12 since it is at the colleges and universities discretion. In Idaho it is not a crime to carry in places that ban carry if it isn't on the official list. You can be arrested for trespass if you don't leave when asked though.

5. So he doesn't want to sit next to an off-duty cop?
If the gun is concealed he will never know.
