Leaders Call for Community Service and Gun Control on MLK Day
http://www.wnyc.org/articles/wnyc-news/2011/jan/17/leaders-call-community-service-and-gun-control-mlk-day/

"Mayor Bloomberg, who's launched a national campaign against illegal guns, said King would be working to "eradicate" gun violence, if he were alive today."

"Schumer, Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Congresswoman Yvette Clark and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand echoed the mayor's call for gun control."

1. I have an MLK quote for Chuckie and Bloomie..
"As we have seen, the first public expression of disenchantment with nonviolence arose around the question of "self-defense." In a sense this is a false issue, for the right to defend one's home and one's person when attacked has been guaranteed through the ages by common law."

---Martin Luther King, Jr., Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? Chapter II, Black Power, Page 55, Harper & Row Publishers Inc., First Edition, 1967.

2. Shame on you for implying that
MLK was a conservative and a racist.

(Everyone knows "self-defense" is a racist, conservative value. Enlightened and civilized people take whatever their assailants dish out until--or unless-- the police arrive.)

6. I once had lunch with a scholar...
who was strongly convinced that MLK's death was inevitable. His premise was that if the Klan didn't get him then his fellow activists would eventually do him. He felt passionately that King's political thinking was going to take him where few of his followers really wanted to go. Seeing as how Malcom X went out the way he did, I think he might have a very strong point.

King was a giant of a man among men. People fear giants. Of course once they're dead you can turn them into whatever you want them to be. It was terribly convenient for everyone that King got cut down before his message matured and spread outside the black community.

7. Well, the dead go to the polls and vote for Mayor Daley in Chicago,
and it probably takes more work for a deceased person to go to the polls and vote for a mayor than it does for them to merely talk to a mayor, I would imagine.
