Baltimore off duty police officer killed over a parking space.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/10/17/maryland.officer.killed/index.html?hpt=T1

1) Officer not killed with a firearm.

2) Not known weather the off duty officer was carrying a firearm.

THEOREM: Firearms do not equal violence.

1. Nobody ever said violence doesn't occur without guns.
Guns just make it more convenient and efficient, empower mass killing as caprice, and embolden robbery, home invasion, and other serious crime.

In the presence of so-called gun rights, all our other supposed rights are rendered moot.

3. Firearms are a trump card.
Edited on Mon Oct-18-10 09:44 AM by Remmah2
Firearms are an equalizer. The apex of power.

70 year old woman w/S&W = 20 year old mugger with knife.

30 year old gay activist w/Glock = 3 gay bashing drunks with baseball bats.

Mossberg 500 trumps home invasion.

"Tulsa Race Riots"; a good read. Many blacks escaped the burning in Tusla because they ignored the Jim Crow gun laws of the era and at the muzzle of a firearm left town. (I happen to work w/a professor who's dad took the family out of town that way.)

Personally my arthritic knees would not be able to out run a mugger either.

You are right, firearms are efficient, efficient at providing an individual with an opposite and if not better reaction to a bad situation.

You are right, firearms are convenient, when my cell phone gets not signal or the police are 20 minutes away my firearms are very convenient.

4. A return to feudalism
Back in the good old days before guns were invented, the wonderful era you wish to return, melee warfare was the norm. Those to the manor born were schooled in swordplay and the martial arts from the time they could walk.

Peasants and serfs, of course, were proscribed any such implements lest they exercise them as means to upward mobility in the class system that prevailed.

Like it or not, it was the musketeer's ability to lay low the highest-born king or noble despite his suit of armor, horses, and castle walls that enabled the rise of democracy. You'd still be toiling to thresh wheat with flails were it not for gunpowder and the desire of some blacksmith to drill longer, straighter and more uniform holes.

The desire to build better guns gave rise to the entire machine tool industry and all that it made possible. As young men, Pratt and Whitney worked for Sam Colt making revolvers.

As old men, their vision included

Now, their company works to whiz you from O'hare to Orlando.

So, unless you determine a way to rescind the vilest instincts of the criminal, insane, and inept of your neighbors you will have no choice but to submit to those stronger, younger or more willing to inflict pain. If that's what you want for you, that's fine.

As you are determined to ignore history and human nature just to impose your will on the rest of us to assuage your fears, I decline to limit my choices.

5. Sharesunited, as I've said before your gun free society already exists in
Nigeria. Yet it's one of the most violent places on earth where Christians and Muslims commit genocides against each other.

So if guns make it easier to kill, why do nations with lower gun possession rates have higher murder rates?

8. If what you say is true ("In the presence of so-called gun rights..." etc.) then you...
have achieved what you seem to want in the instant that you tap out the keys: a full-scale, deeply authoritarian society, subject of course to your moral values.

We figured that out long ago, SU.
