GUNS IN THE NEWS--December 19, 2003
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - Comment on a story by replying to that story.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any messages that appear to be personal attacks against another DU-er or violations of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Fatal Shooting Is City's 70th Murder (OH)
"Another murder in Cincinnati Thursday night was the city's 70th.
According to police, Isaac Newbill, 23, was shot to death near the intersection of Charlotte and John streets in the west end, WLWT Eyewitness News 5 reported.
Investigators said they have no suspects.
Cincinnati hasn't had 70 murders since 1977. "

2. Whataburger Beefs Up Security After Robberies
"Whataburger officials announced Thursday that they will beef up security after two of their Houston-area locations were robbed recently.
Police said two men walked into a crowded Whataburger restaurant at 3797 Southwest Freeway near Weslayan around 7 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money and keys from customers and employees.
"I knew immediately (what was about to happen) ... the way they came in ... they were already hiding their face," customer Mario Cruz said. "One pulled out a pistol and the other pulled out a 12 gauge shotgun." "

4. Jury convicts Malvo in sniper shootings
"CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Rejecting the defense claim that Lee Boyd Malvo was insane after a former Army soldier transformed him into a dispassionate killer, a jury convicted the teen-ager of capital murder yesterday in connection with last fall's sniper assaults that left 10 dead in the Washington area and millions living in fear.
Jurors deliberated about 13 hours over two days before emerging - some red-eyed - for the reading of their decision to convict Malvo, 18, of two counts of capital murder. Although the charges related to the fatal shooting of Linda Franklin, 47, an FBI analyst who was killed outside a Home Depot store near Falls Church on Oct. 14, 2002, prosecutors had introduced evidence during the trial of 10 other murders they believe Malvo committed in the Washington area and elsewhere.
Malvo, his arms folded in front of him on the defense table, slumped slightly but remained stone-faced as the verdict was announced in the hushed courtroom. The convictions make him eligible for the death penalty - the sentence a jury recommended last month for co-defendant John Allen Muhammad."

Now the fight for justice shifts to Congress , where the Republicans and the corrupt gun industry are trying to shield the Bullseye gun shop from liability for arming the Beltway Sniper, Burford Furrow, etc. You may have noted that when the head of ATF resigned a short while ago he specifically singled out AshKKKroft's foot-dragging on criminal chages in that case.

Edited on Fri Dec-19-03 10:42 AM by slackmaster
I would bet that NRA members are at least as horrified as anyone else at what Malvo did. As a supporter of gun owner's rights myself, if I was not opposed to the death penalty I'd be screaming for the two DC "snipers" to be executed promptly in public. A good old fashioned hanging in the town square of old Williamsburg would be too good for them.

Edited for sp3ling.

who heds a PAC that gave 100% of its money to Democrats the past two election cycles.

As Iverglas noted, the same Democrats who got money from the Brady Center also got money from Planned Parenthood and the League for Conservation Voters.

Whereas the turds the NRA gave money to tended also to get money from anti-abortion groups and polluters.

41. In fact it IS completely accurate...
as a look at Opensecrets.org shows...in 2002 and againn so far in 2004, 100% of all gun control contributions have gone to Democrats.

In fact, if one goes back to 1992, 94% of all gun control contributions have gone to Democrats.

http://www.opensecrets.org/industries/indus.asp?Ind=Q12

Of the top twenty recipients of gun money, only two are Democrats and they're both obscure goobers, one of whom is a Zell Miller-type DINO.

""The Republicans have done a wonderful job of saying (Democrats) are going to take our guns and kill unborn babies and keep prayer out of schools. I will not be out-gunned, out-prayed or out-daddied by anyone," he said in a speech in Huntsville, Tenn. during his campaign."

We know what their real agenda is, of course, but...

"COLUMBUS, Ohio (AFP) - Ohio authorities shuttered 34 schools and ordered 20,000 schoolchildren to stay home in the latest fallout from a a string of sniper shootings that has terrorised a suburb of this Midwestern town.
The education chief for Ohio's sixth largest school district cancelled classes for a second consecutive day following the discovery that two school buses had been struck by bullets in a zone where a sniper has been operating.
Investigators have not been able to conclusively link the bus shootings to a string of 16 other, apparently random, shootings that have left one person dead and set this area on edge. "

50. Masked robbers terrorizing north side restaurants
A group of masked robbers terrorizing north Houston taquerias are merciless in their quest for cash, robbery investigators said Friday.

Armed with shotguns, pistols and knives, the robbers have beaten, shot at and stabbed even cooperative victims. Since Oct. 30, the group has stormed nine taquerias and a Denny's. The number of attacks is escalating, police say, with seven such heists occurring in the last two weeks alone.

"They are being very brutal," said investigator Roger Chappell. "They are injuring people inside these restaurants. Whether (the victims) are complying or not makes no difference. Unfortunately, we haven't had a lot of witnesses stay around that could give us information."

Police are advising restaurant operators to keep surveillance cameras in good condition and to be cautious of anyone lurking outside, especially groups of people in a car.

DALLAS -- Three people -- a man and two women -- were found shot dead in after an apparent home invasion at a southwest Dallas apartment complex early today, police said.

Police were called to a reported shooting about 12:30 a.m. at the Bella Vista Apartments in the Redbird area, about 10 miles southwest of downtown Dallas.

A lighted Christmas tree still glowed in the front window of the apartment when police arrived.

The front door of the apartment apparently had been kicked in and the victims had been shot multiple times, apparently with a pistol and rifle, said Sgt. Ken Sprecher, a police spokesman
