Are there any federal statues on CCW or central databases on reciprocal CCW between the states? I am trying to find out what shall-issue and may-issue states honor another states CCW permit. Anyone know?

3. Great links! But what do I do about states that do not honor my state's CCW

when passing through? Do I need to open carry? Unload and secure? keep in the car?


We are traveling from Washington to the East coast and back, and I will be carrying. I just do not want to get into trouble...... Any advice is appreciated.

4. Check the states that you will be traveling through.

Some have open carry, although many LEO's don't like it. Wisconsin and Illinois have no concealed carry.

5. When passing through a hostile state...

unload and secure just before entering. Make sure that you have enough gas to make it through the state, obey all traffic laws, and don't stop. Reload and arm once you are in a friendly state.

6. Federal law allows

a legal owner to transport thru states with restrictions. One must unload and have locked away.

7. TITLE 18 > PART I > CHAPTER 44 >t § 926A. Interstate transportation of firearms

One of the good things that came out of FOPA.

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

Some people interpret this to mean that you can keep an unloaded firearm and boxed ammo in your trunk (inaccessible from passenger) but not necessarily locked in a separate container. If you don't have a trunk than you can have your unloaded gun in a hard container locked in your passenger compartment (But not in glove box or console). Some people say its best to keep the locked container in the back of the vehicle (more inaccessible?).

Super safe people lock their unloaded guns in hard containers in the trunk, plus put ammo in locked hard containers.

8. If you are going to carry in another state

that allows it, you best know the carry laws in that state. Some require you to tell a cop right away that you have a permit and are carrying, others don't. Some require a secure holster. Not knowing the laws of the state will not get you off. Some may even be a felony. It is a felony to reach for your wallet if your gun is in the same area without permission. Best be sure and read the laws of the state your in.

9. So after some reading, I think its best to just keep it in the camper.

I mean, I think that if I need my weapon while driving on the highway, I have bigger problems to worry about...


What I am most concerned with is when stopped for the night at a campground (we prefer to go boon-docking instead of staying at campgrounds) and I ALWAYS keep my Ruger .45 in Condition One on my side and the wife keep the Mossberg 12Ga in Condition One on her side (after a scary encounter with drink rednecks in the woods one night, but thats another story).

I figure from my reading today, the best thing is to just keep it in the camper while traveling. Anyone disagree?
