1. In a state that treats the opening of Deer Hunting season as a holiday...
you expect something different?

My roomie from college was from NJ and student taught at the local Elementary School near our PA College. She couldn't understand why the school had the Monday after thanksgiving off for the students. I had to explain to her about Deer Hunting season. If we made opening day a school day - half the kids would be absent anyways, even those too young to go hunting (I think 12 is the cut-off age).

7. Just a remark in jest, thanks for informing DUers that in many areas hunting has a rich tradition.

8. When I was a kid (pre-12) I went, too.
12 is to young to shoot, but not too young to go camping and / or hang out with those who are hunting. We used to take off the last two weeks of November- I'd get homework assignments from my teachers and spend down time while camping doing that.
