And MORE Voices for Gun Control
We've seen the sort of ugly racist scum (Lott, Hatch, Nugent, Pratt, etc.) who push the dishonest "gun rights" agenda...

Here's more on the courageous decent Americans pushing for gun control.

1. Julia Carson
"Former Congressman Andy Jacobs eloquently introduces the story of his successor, Julia Carson: "The only thing some people learn from oppression is hatred and revenge. Others learn compassion and empathy. From the physical pain of material poverty and the mindlessly cruel persecution of nitwit racism, Julia Carson made her choice of hard work, compassion and a pleasing sense of humor."
The result of Julia Carson’s choice has been an extraordinary career of public service. Before she made history in 1996 by becoming the first woman and the first African-American Indianapolis has ever sent to Congress, Julia Carson served 18 years in the Indiana General Assembly and then 6 years as Center Township Trustee.
In June 1999, President Clinton signed into law Congresswoman Carson’s bill to authorize a Congressional Gold Medal for Rosa Parks. In 2000, Rep. Carson and Sen. Lugar (R-IN) successfully passed language as part of the Agriculture Risk Protection Act Conference Report which enhanced the identification of children eligible for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP).
During the 107th Congress, the House adopted legislation written by Rep. Carson which would require that arsenic treated lumber offered for sale in the United States have affixed to it a consumer warning label. She was also the sponsor of the largest Amtrak reauthorization bill, the National Defense Rail Act, which would have provided the rail passenger system with over $40 billion in funds. Other Rep. Carson legislation included a gun safety measure which would have required federal standards for handgun safety devices, and a bill which would have placed the entire state of Indiana on Daylight Saving Time, saving Indiana residents over $7 million dollars in electricity bills annually.
In the 108th Congress, Rep. Carson is set to reintroduce the National Defense Rail Act, and to introduce legislation which would require credit bureaus to verify that any negative information about to be placed on a person's credit report is a fair and accurate before they do it. She will also be the sponsor of legislation that will regulate the Debt Consolidation Industry."

And she's for gun control....

2. Courageous, decent Americans
I think that all right-thinking people in this country are sick and tired of being told that ordinary, decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I'm certainly not! But I'm sick and tired of being told that I am!

4. As opposed to the scum of the earth
"The so-called gun control bill enacted by the government is nothing but anti-self defense laws designed to disarm law abiding citizens. The right to own guns as guaranteed by the 2nd amendment to the United States Constitution must be protected. Gun ownership is NOT a privilege, it’s a CONSTITUTIONALLY PROTECTED RIGHT!!! The Texas Knights work to completely restore the right of all law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms."

Of having a sense of humor. If you can't chuckle at Monty Python then there's something wrong with you.

(Speaking of humor, I'm still chuckling that you actually believe the Ku Klux when they claim to support gun rights for minorities.)

Oh, I know that "gun rights" is racist horseshit. What I find a big old laugh is the RKBA crowd's keening and wailing whenever I point out that the KKK and the NRA are both bigoted scum.

So explain how this applies to those of us on this board who are not members of either group (KKK and the NRA)?

Seeing as you have proclaimed the blanket accusation of gun rights people are racist, would you be so kind as to explain.

"why would you call us racists"
Spoon, you just got through announncing you had nothing to do with either the NRA or the KKK (not that there's much difference between the two). Now in this post, you're calling them "us."

"If I were to call you a racist piece of shit, I'm sure you would want to know why too."

31. Once again
you try to duck the question by spinning the original post into one of your fabrications.

"Now in this post, you're calling them "us.""

As you can see below, I was not refering to the KKK and NRA as us. Had that been the case, I would understand your reply. However, that was not the case and therefore must conclude that a. you are either avoiding the question, b. have blatantly misread the statement or c. you are unable to read the english language.

"So explain how this applies to those of us on this board who are not members of either group (KKK and the NRA)"

To further add to this, the question posed was; "why would you call us racists unless you had a valid reason?" *us* being those previously refered to in the first post as the participants of this board that are not members of the KKK or NRA.

I am quite certain that you understood this from the beginning anyway, but just in case I wanted to *highlight* this for anyone joining in late.

Now that we have cleared this up I will again ask the question.

What valid reason do you have to accuse pro-RKBA Democrats on this board of being racist? Pro-RKBA Democrats who are not members of any group you have mentioned, to include the KKK or NRA?

You can either answer the question or you can answer to the mods.
You have made hundreds of accusations of racism against the people of this board, and present nary a reason for them.
By the way I didn't see you up in GD making those statements over the last few days.
What are your convictions only strong enough to hide in the dark of the dungeon?
So do you have the sack to answer the question or not?

Straw Man. Neither I nor any of the other good pro-RKBA folks on this board support any of the above or their bad ideas.

My support of gun rights comes from my own heart and mind, based on my own observations and experience. I believe your relentless spew of hateful speech comes from your own personal experience as well.

How about sharing it with us, MrBenchley? What drove you to hate all gun owners so much that you lump them in with the KKK and Nazis?

I'm very interested in the source of the intensity of your commitment to the issue of gun control. You clearly spend more time posting about it on this board than any other contributor.

I'm not trying to make this a personal issue between yourself and myself, but it's clear that your threads and replies have a common thread: Pro-gun = BAD, Pro-gun-control = GOOD. You bypass every opportunity to express moderation e.g. by acknowledging that there are at least SOME gun owners who are not racists or Nazis.

I respect your POV but do not believe it is completely rational. I want to understand whyt. I suspect that there is something in your past, perhaps more than one thing, that has inspired you to such a strong commitment to hatred.

Were you robbed at gunpoint?

Have you experienced the loss of a loved one to violent crime?

Have you ever lost a friend due to an accidental shooting?

What's the source of your energy, MrBenchley?

26. Danny K. Davis
"Danny K. Davis was chosen by the people of the 7th Congressional District of Illinois as their Representative in Congress on November 5, 1996. He has been re-elected each term since, most recently on November 5, 2002.

Congressman Davis is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Progressive Caucus, the Congressional Community Health Center Caucus, the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, the Congressional Steel Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues,  and is Chair of the Congressional Postal Caucus and is a Regional Whip in the Democratic Caucus.

Congressman Davis has distinguished himself as an articulate voice for his constituents and as an effective legislator able to move major bills to passage despite his relative lack of seniority. His initiative to quadruple the Access to Jobs funding in the 105th Congress, one of only two successful amendments to the transportation authorization bill; and his bi-partisan Community Renewal Act in the 106th Congress, designed to bring investment and jobs to economically impacted communities are examples of his successes.

In the 107th Congress he introduced the Public Safety Ex-Offenders Self Sufficiency Act which continues to gain support in the 108th Congress.  The Act is designed to rehabilitate and to prepare ex-offenders for a healthy and positive reentry into normal society once they are released from correctional facilities and institutions and to reduce recidivism.

3. Robert Brady
Congressman Robert A. Brady (D., Pa.) was sworn into office on May 21, 1998, just two days after his election to represent Pennsylvania's First Congressional District. He serves on the House Armed Services and House Administration Committees.
His entrance into the political arena began in 1967 when he was elected a member of the 34th Ward Democratic Executive Committee. He has served as Deputy Mayor for Labor in the administration of Philadelphia Mayor W. Wilson Goode; a consultant to the Pennsylvania State Senate; a Pennsylvania Turnpike Commissioner; and a member of the Board of Directors of the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority. Elected Chairman of Philadelphia's Democratic Party more than two decades ago, Congressman Brady has held that position longer than anyone in history.
As a result of his legislative support of issues of importance to working families and other under-served Americans, Congressman Brady has earned an "A" or 100 percent rating from the AFL-CIO, NAACP, The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights , National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, Human Rights Campaign and every national human rights organization that scores Congress since he was sworn in. In addition, Congressman Brady has twice been honored as a "Friend of the National Parks" by the National Parks Conservation Association for his contribution to protecting and enhancing the environment in America's national parks.
In recognition of his growing clout in Congress, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer appointed Brady to the position of Senior Whip. The appointment gives Brady responsibility for ensuring direct communication between Democratic leaders and the rank and file and for delivering votes on issues of importance to working people and the disadvantaged.
Regarded as a unifier and master negotiator, Congressman Brady has been able to bring the city's racially and ethnically diverse leadership together. He is credited with being the decisive factor in the election of Philadelphia Mayor John Street in a very tight race. Congressman Brady was widely praised as key to the settlement of a labor impasse that threatened to shut down Philadelphia public schools. He also was roundly acknowledged by the media as the driving force behind the contract settlements in the 1999 Boeing and WAWA strikes and the 40-day strike by public transit workers in 1998.
Upon graduating St. Thomas More High School, Brady found employment as a carpenter and soon was part of the leadership of the carpenter's union. To this day he is as proud of the union card he carries in his wallet as he is of the Philosophy course he teaches at the University of Pennsylvania."

And he's for gun control...

7. Lois Capps
"During her 20-year tenure as a nurse and health advocate for the Santa Barbara School District, thousands of Santa Barbara’s children and families benefited from Capps’ personal care and leadership. As director of Santa Barbara County’s Teenage Pregnancy and Parenting Project and the Parent and Child Enrichment Center, Capps gave countless young parents the support and encouragement to stay in school while providing them with critical child development skills to ensure their children grow up in healthy, loving environments. Capps also taught for 10 years as a part-time instructor of Early Childhood Education at Santa Barbara City College.

Capps now draws on this extensive healthcare background as founder and co-chair of the House Nursing Caucus. She also serves as co-chair of the Congressional Heart and Stroke Coalition, the House Cancer Caucus, the Congressional Biomedical Research Caucus, the Congressional School Health and Safety Caucus, the Congressional Hearing Health Caucus, and the House Democratic Task Force on Health.

Capps has a long history of commitment to many community organizations. She has served on the boards and been active with many organizations, including the American Heart Association, the Family Service Agency, the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, and the American Red Cross. The daughter of a Lutheran minister, Capps’ strong faith has also kept her active in the local religious community, where she has been a member of Grace Lutheran Church since 1964."

"epresentative Jesse L. Jackson, Jr. began service in the United States House of Representatives on December 12, 1995, as he was sworn in as a member of the 104th Congress, the 91st African American ever elected to Congress.

Representative Jackson currently sits on the House Appropriations Committee, serving as the 5th ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education as well as the 2nd ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related Programs. His leadership created the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities at the National Institutes of Health in 2001, hailed by many minority health experts as the most important civil rights legislation since the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Representative Jackson also secured funding for the Institute of Medicine's 2002 report on health disparities, "Unequal Treatment.'

Prior to his congressional service, Representative Jackson served as the National Field Director of the National Rainbow Coalition. In this role, he instituted a national non-partisan program that successfully registered millions of new voters. He also created a voter education program to teach citizens the importance of participating in the political process, including how to use technology to win elections and more effectively participate in politics.

Born in the midst of the voting rights struggle on March 11, 1965, Representative Jackson spent his twenty-first birthday in a jail cell in Washington, D.C. for taking part in a protest against apartheid at the South African Embassy."

16. Earl Blumenauer
First elected to the US House of Representatives in a special election in May 1996, Earl Blumenauer has carved out a unique role as Congress' chief spokesperson for Livable Communities, places where families are safe, healthy, and economically secure. He understands that the federal government, as the nation's largest landowner and landlord, has an enormous impact on the livability of our communities and should lead by example. Its agencies - the US Postal Service, the General Services Administration, and the Department of Defense, for example - should exemplify the behavior it expects from private citizens, local governments, and corporations.

On the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, he has advocated vigorously for transportation policies, programs, and funding levels that support regional planning, encourage public participation, and enable communities to craft a range of transportation options. As a member of the International Relations Committee, Mr. Blumenauer has been a strong proponent of US leadership in the international arena, focusing on environmental concerns, global climate change, and the livability challenges faced by fast-growing urban regions in developing countries.

Mr. Blumenauer's work on Livable Communities issues has earned him the title "Johnny Appleseed of Livability". Since his election to Congress in 1996, he has visited more than 100 communities throughout the country, working with local governments, citizens and civic organizations build effective partnerships to manage growth, improve their environment, and provide transportation choices. Equally committed to partnerships with his colleagues on Capitol Hill, he was instrumental in forming the Task Force on Livable Communities, as well as several bi-partisan caucuses: the Bicycle Caucus, the Army Corps Reform Caucus, the Greenscissors Caucus, and the Public Broadcasting Caucus. He also works closely with other congressional organizations such as the House Sustainable Development Caucus."

18. Nita M. Lowey
"Congresswoman Nita M. Lowey is currently serving her eighth term in Congress, representing parts of Westchester and Rockland counties. She was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1988 and has served in the Democratic Leadership.

Lowey has been described as "courageous" by The New York Times, and recognized by the New York Daily News as one of "New York's key Members of Congress." Newsday said she is "terrific" and "delivers for New York." The Journal News called Lowey "one of the most influential Members of Congress."

Lowey was the first woman and the first New Yorker to chair the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, leading the organization from 2001 to 2002.

As a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee, and the Ranking Democrat on the Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related Programs Subcommittee, Lowey has developed a reputation as an extremely effective, committed legislator with a substantial record of accomplishment. Congressional Quarterly cited her as one of the 50 most effective Members of Congress, saying she "maneuvers skillfully through the appropriations process."

Lowey is known as a strong advocate for women, children, and families. She has been a champion of education since her election to the House, fighting for school modernization, teacher development, and literacy programs. Under Lowey's leadership, federal funding for after-school programs has increased from $1 million in 1996 to $1 billion today. Lowey supported monumental education reform, the No Child Left Behind Act, and is working to ensure full funding for the bill's initiatives."

While serving in the Florida House, Deutsch established a reputation as a tenacious advocate for his constituents and an independent voice in the Democratic caucus -- strong traditions he continues today.

Congressman Deutsch has built a solid record on balancing the budget, improving health care, increasing educational opportunities, fighting crime, and protecting South Florida's environment....Congressman Deutsch serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where he is ranking member of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. He is also a member of the subcommittees on Telecommunications and the Internet, the Environment and Hazardous Materials, and Consumer Trade and Protection."

And he's for gun control.

Due to the fact that certain DUers can't conduct themselves with a modicum of courtesy, this thread is being locked. Once again, DU asks that you attack the idea, not the person.
