Soldier hurls self on bomb to save colleagues
April 30 2004 at 07:15AM

Seoul - A North Korean army officer who threw himself on an anti-tank grenade to save hundreds of soldiers in training became the communist country's first hero of this century, the official KCNA news agency reported on Friday.

The report was the latest in a recent series detailing heroics that seemed designed to underscore to North Koreans the country's ability to endure adversity after last week's train blast in which 161 people died and hundreds were injured.

It was also another rare report on an accident in a country that usually keeps disasters and mishaps under wraps.
