Bolivian Indians lay siege to La Paz
Don't get much news out of Bolivia. Sounds like Mr.
Sanchez de Lozada has had a short honeymoon, and sounds
like the "indians" have got him by the short hairs. This
is, to some degree, more drug war stupidity.

Bolivian Indians have set up debilitating
roadblocks around the country's capital city La
Paz in protest at the government's inability to
relieve poverty in South America's poorest
nation.

President Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada has
been pushing for dialogue with the protesters,
but a leading Indian lawmaker rejected talks
until the army withdrew from highland Indian
towns.

---

The protests have choked supply routes into
the capital La Paz, where food stocks are
running low.

While prices rise and fears of more bloodshed
grow, the president's approval rating has
plunged to 9 per cent.
