Manitoba's GHG Emissions Up 20% Between 2004 And 2005 - Free Press
Premier Gary Doer may be chummy with California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger while touting the province's drive to lower greenhouse gas emissions, but Manitoba's jump in emissions last year was the highest in the country.

According to a report released by Environment Canada on Wednesday, the second since the former federal Liberal government decided to force all large industries to report the greenhouse gases they emit, Manitoba jumped by 20 per cent from 2004 to 2005.

Leading the way on greenhouse gas emissions in the province were Simplot Canada's fertilizer plant in Brandon, Trans Canada Pipeline Systems, and Manitoba Hydro's generating station in Brandon. Earlier this year, Simplot's Brandon plant was sold to the Koch Nitrogen Company, while the generating station uses a mix of coal and natural gas. Manitoba went from a total of 2.4 million tonnes in 2004 to 2.9 million tonnes in 2005.

But Jim Rondeau, the province's minister of science, technology, energy and mines, said while he's concerned about the increase, he noted it's very small compared to the emissions by some other provinces.

Whew! I thought that only Americans could use the "We Don't Suck As Much As China" argument - what a relief!

1. Once again, we all need to ask ourselves....
what am I doing to reduce greenhouse gases? What am I doing to reduce our overall dependence on cheap fossil fuels. Even minor adjustments in our lifestyles could make a huge difference if enough of us commit to it. If possible, take transit once or twice a week. Walk as much as possible. Consolidate trips. Turn off lights when not in the room or not necessary. If we don't start doing these things now, it will be so much harder for us later.
