The January warmth sort of reminds me of when I lived in California.

Except for the brief December cold snap, there hasn't been much winter here.

4. It's in the 60s here in the Ozarks

and this is usually the coldest time of the year. We are also very dry-usually we get a lot of precipitation this time of year as well. Everyone's well is going dry and folks are getting worried.

5. 45 ABOVE at 7 AM yesterday in eastern Montana

Same bit, a cold snap early in Dec and now my grass, clover growing again. Flowers sprouting for weeks now.

Know it will get cold here soon, but a bit unusually to be outside in a tee shirt in January (several days up in the 50s for highs) Hell, it RAINED on New Year's Day! Not sleet, not snow, RAIN.

Thinking of looking for plants for a different zone range for the garden this year.

8. 86 days without rain, and counting here in Phoenix.

Flagstaff has had no snow this year. At 7500 ft. It's pretty normal for them to have snow in October. We're shaping up to have no snowpack at all this year.

California, though, had some powerful storms. They must have passed to the North of your state.

I have no idea about the snow pack situation there.

It was in California that I first learned to agressively conserve water, flushing with the shower water, that sort of thing.

11. It's crushing the local ski industry. I just learned last night...

that they historically weren't allowed to even make snow. Although they just won permission to do so. Local tribes disapproved of covering the mountain with waste-water, as they consider it a sign of disrespect. In the former world, that was a non-issue, since they always had plenty of natural snow-pack. But now that push has come to shove, the tribes (predictably) never stood a chance.

Not being native american, I don't myself have any problem with the idea of making snow up there. But the fact that they have to make it at all is very, very weird.

Of course, this is true generally for the southwest. Just another brick in the giant wall of drought that's going to fall on us.
