The pukes are going to try to backdoor ARCTIC DRILLING by attaching it to
the federal budget. Please contact your congressmen.

The Arctic Wildlife Refuge is under attack -- a sneak attack. We need your help right now to stop oil drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge before it's too late.

In the next two weeks, President Bush and his pro-drilling allies in Congress may try a sneaky backdoor trick to pass their controversial proposal to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by inserting it in the must-pass federal budget bill.

Click here now to stop the oil industry from destroying the Arctic Refuge -- send a message to your members of Congress demanding that they do everything in their power to keep drilling revenues out of the budget bill.

In March, some members of Congress will try to approve Arctic drilling by hiding their proposal in the federal budget bills -- the only bills that are exempt from filibuster or extended debate. This sneaky attempt not only defies the democratic process, but it reveals the fundamental weakness of the push for drilling: proponents of drilling know they cannot pass this through the normal legislative process, so they are resorting to a procedural tactic to prohibit an open and honest debate.

A lot is riding on this decision. This incomparable wilderness is home to more than 250 animal species, including wolves, grizzlies, caribou, and millions of migrating birds. Unfortunately, it is also the target of an intense, relentless lobbying campaign by the oil industry.

Unless we stop them, this world-class wilderness will become a vast oil development field.

We need you to help make some noise! If we can draw enough attention to this issue, we can stop oil industry allies in Congress from getting away with this attempt to slip Arctic drilling into the budget bill.

2. Someone needs to show them all the flim "The Corporation"
... but it probably wouldn't help. They're too f..cking stupid to realize that destroying the world's resources will be the ultimate economic disaster.

4. Explain why this is so in contrast with recent news that oil industry
isn't interested in exploring ANWR?

The R's want this terribly bad, the oil companies are stepping out of the fray. What's up?

5. I saw this too
and don't understand it. Unless the companies are trying to appear above the fray, so that the politicians they're paying can do their dirty work.
But maybe they finally wised up to the 10 years it would take to see the first drop of oil, and forgot to call off the dogs.

6. It's about demonstrating power
The repukes want to show that they CAN open ANWR and gloat while saying fuck you to Democrats and the environment.

The subsidies to the oil companies will follow soon enough. One of the reasons oil companies aren't too excited anymore is economic -- there just won't be a substantial return on investment. The repukes will fix that by subsidizing exploration and production start up costs as a favor to their contributors.

7. So, is this a circumstance for Judo politics? or is a stand necessary?
If its about pushing, maybe we let them push but force them to give something DEMS want in return.

If on the otherhand ANWR is just the beginning to attacks on exploitation of federally owned lands a stand has to be made.

I'm guessing the people of Alaska, the Rocky Mountain States and the Great Basin would like to see some sort of development to help with jobs and the tax base...Is there an agenda in there that the Democrats should promote rather than fight?

For example can you promote ranching/wildlands conservation for family ranchers rather than corporations that want to strip away mountains to gain access to minimal amounts of gold bearing rock???
