President-Elect Obama Selects Energy Team

President-Elect Barack Obama has chosen Dr. Steven Chu as Secretary of Energy. Dr. Chu was one of three scientists who shared the Nobel Prize for physics in 1997 for work in cooling and trapping atoms with laser light and has been the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) for the past four years. Chu is a strong advocate for alternative and renewable energy. LBNL is currently working on several hydrogen and fuel cell related research projects, including hydrogen storage materials and new catalysts.



Obama has also made several other selections to round out his energy and science team:



Lisa Jackson – Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) administrator

Carol Browner - Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change

Heather Zichal, Deputy Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change

Nancy Sutley – Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ)

Dr. John Holdren - Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST)

Dr. Jane Lubchenco - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Administrator

Dr. Harold Varmus – Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology (PCAST)

Dr. Eric Lander – Co-Chair of the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology (PCAST
