Time to Batten Down the Hatches and Brazillionish Solar Roofie Thingies On the Maine Solar House.
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 06:31 PM by NNadir
There is some risk of the very important solar cells on the roof of the world saving solar panels on the famous http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/5/6/205825/4292">Main Solar House being turned into electronic waste before "payback" time because http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080927/ap_on_re_us/tropical_weather">part of (the) Maine coast (is) under (a rare) tropical storm warning . The effect this may have on climate change will be determined by in part, whether the solar panels blowing off will prevent more of the lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of television crews to drive around in big trucks with tons of equipment to report on how the Maine Solar House is saving us.

Let us all put aside any other concerns we may have had about any other thing in the universe and pray for the Maine Solar House.

EASTPORT, Maine - A rare tropical storm warning and hurricane watch were posted for parts of the Maine coast on Saturday as Hurricane Kyle roared north toward the region with a threat of conditions similar to one of New England's nor'easter storms.

"Hurricane season isn't over, " said Maine Emergency Management Agency director Rob McAleer. "It's been a very active season."

It was Maine's first hurricane watch in 17 years, the National Weather Service said. Elsewhere in New England, a hurricane warning was posted for Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts in September 1996, according to the weather service office in Taunton, Mass.

Two to 4 inches of rain had already fallen along some coastal areas by midday Saturday, and the storm was expected to deliver an additional 2 to 4 inches, said Eric Schwibs of the weather service in Gray.

1. It's a very cool house. I do hope it fares well, but I think it's unlikely
the panels will come flying off since I believe they are actually the roof itself. But they could get mangled by debris. :(

2. I like your argument, that the Maine Solar House, if applicable, would be "oridinary."
But it misses the whole cost of extremely cheap fossil based electricity being the defining factor with regards to demand being met. There's no demand for solar shingles because fossil energy, for the forseeable future, supplies the demand at a comparatively low cost.

The same argument also applies to nuclear reactors, unless fossil based electricity is *banned* by the *government* there is *no* significant economic incentive for either to be built. In which case solar panels and thermally designd houses automatically are competitive! Solar more so because the infrastructure for it is palthy in comparison to nuclear (I need only cite IEA R&D expendatures to prove that point), and would be well within the grasp of venture capitalists if fossil fuels for electricity production was banned wholesale.
