Help for butterflies living on a wing and a prayer
HEREFORDSHIRE is giving a helping hand to a rare woodland butterfly.

A three-year conservation project led by the Forestry Commission and Butterfly Conservation is focusing on the wood white, one of the UK’s most rapidly declining butterflies.

Herefordshire remains a relative stronghold for the species and a grant of more than £88,000 from the SITA Trust is helping to safeguard its future in the county.

Coppicing and cutting back vegetation gives the wood white caterpillar’s main sources of food (bird’s foot trefoil and meadow vetchling) a chance to flourish. The project will seek to restore the butterfly’s natural habitat and monitor its numbers.

Over the next three years the project will be rolled out across eight Forestry Commission woods in Herefordshire.

1. I don't know much about butterflies but have become more knowledgeable
Edited on Tue Aug-12-08 04:58 PM by EV_Ares
from my wife who studied about them in college and she took me to this butterfly exhibit last sunday where they had all kinds including tropical and the cocoons and experts where you could even see some coming out that were hanging on some of the plants. Anyway, it was quite the thing and as nature goes so fantastic when they explain things to you and you put all the connections of life into your mind as much as possible and wonder, how in the world.

I told my wife after this when we were talking about the food chain, chain of life whatever, I said, are you sure God didn't make a mistake by creating "man" because I really cannot see where he contributes but only has disrupted the food chain and destroyed so much. I have a hard time figuring out where man fits into the as I call it the "chain of life" as each species is dependent on the other.

Sorry for the long post but I went to the link and printed that out for her because she will be interested. Thanks for posting.

2. I'm sending this
sending it to my aunt, she's so nuts about butterflies she's spent the last few years farming hundreds of them, maybe thousands a year, all on her back porch.
They're all important but certain ones declining is just a shame on all of us.
