Death toll in Siberian mine accident rises to five
While we've been having fun bickering over how dangerous nuclear energy is, several miners in Siberia's Keremovo oblast have given their lives in pursuit of coal.

KEMEROVO, June 4 (RIA Novosti) - Rescue workers have discovered the body of a fifth miner following the recent mine accident in Western Siberia, a mine spokesman said on Wednesday.

...

A total of 17 miners were working in the Lenin mine in Mezhdurechensk, in the south of the Kemerovo Region, when a cave-in occurred on May 30.

Eleven of the miners managed to make their way to the surface, while six others remained trapped underground. One miner was rescued on Sunday and taken to hospital while another four had previously been found dead.

The discovery of the fifth body means that all the trapped miners have now been accounted for.

This is not being covered very well by the western press. I will post more news when I find it.

2. Coal -- It's What's For Disaster
But since coal DOES contain a small amount of uranium, it qualifies ... I think.

3. Yep! Remember that even a *tiny* bit of "nukular" justifies mindless panic!
A coal mine will also spread far more uranium around the planet's surface
than a uranium mine will ... not that anyone's counting that of course ...

4. It's like the Drug War
We're supposed to get all worked up over two or three ecstasy deaths -- almost always caused by multiple-drug abuse -- and overlook 200,000 iatrogenic or "doctor-caused" medication-error deaths a year. And party-scene "Harm Reduction" efforts are condemned as a sinister gateway behavior.

But actually promote public health education regarding drug and medication safety issues in general?

The outrage!

They're not.

Kicking, and if anyone else fancies a glass for Mezhdurechensk's dead, feel free to join me.

6. Well, when it gets to Friday night here ...
... I shall lift one in memory of the polar bear who, to me,
is starting to symbolise all the unfortunate creatures who had
the bad luck to be born in the last few centuries rather than
in the preceding millenia - when they would only have had to cope
with natural events (instead of the decidedly unnatural and
malignant infection from which the planet is currently suffering).

But thank you for keeping the miners' memory alive for a short while.

7. Shit, give it 10 years...

...we'll have the remaining polar bears working the coal mines

(I think this is dark humour, but to be be honest I've given up - it may be precognition).

Edit: It's lunchtime. Hie thee to the pub.
