Oil running out as prime energy source: world poll
Sun Apr 20, 2008 5:06pm EDT

By Deborah Zabarenko, Environment Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Most people believe oil is
running out and governments need to find another fuel,
but Americans are alone in thinking their leaders are
out of touch with reality on this issue, an international
poll said on Sunday.

On average, 70 percent of respondents in 15 countries
and the Palestinian territories said they thought oil
supplies had peaked. Only 22 percent of the nearly
15,000 respondents in nations ranging from China to
Mexico believed enough new oil would be found to keep
it a primary fuel source.

"What's most striking is there's such a widespread
consensus around the world that oil is running out and
governments need to make a real effort to find new
sources of energy," said Steven Kull, director of
WorldPublicOpinion.org, a global research organization
that conducted the poll.

In the United States, the world's biggest oil consumer
and among the biggest emitters of climate-warming
pollution from fossil fuel use, 76 percent of respondents
said oil is running out, but most believed the U.S.
government mistakenly assumes there would be enough
to keep oil a main source of fuel.

1. Every Third World peasant is aware of Peak Oil, but our fearless
leaders in the US remain completely clueless.

Why am I not surprised?

2. Oh I think our "leaders" are aware of peak oil. It's why they are so busy grabbing
all of the middle class's resources. They are using our money to build their mountain redoubts and Paraguay retreats and keep armies of mercenaries to defend themselves from us. What they can't envision is a peaceful transition to newer energy sources that take away one of their main levers of power over everyone else on earth.

3. If you really really want to know what is wrong with this country
Look no further than your post. You just stated that "every third world peasant" is more qualified to understand and make decisions about make highly technical and extremely complex matters than people who are advised by some of the best minds in the world.

Anti-intellectualism reigns supreme. I know there is corruption, graft and pandering, but that isn't what you are saying. I see you've internalized the main Limbaugh message perfectly.

4. No, I'm saying Bush and his buddies are either stupid or deeply in denial.

It doesn't take a MIT PhD to see that oil supplies are tight and gonna get tighter as the world's population grows and everybody buys new gas hogs to tool around in just like us.

But you go right ahead thinking Bush is the genius and ordinary people are frickin' retards.

Edited to add: "or duplicitous" to the subject line.

5. You edit didn't take.

I totally agree with the subject line; but I consider that cabal to be a roadblock to those in this country who are 'leading' on the subject of energy. Bush etal are representative of the oil industry, and here is huge consensus regarding change outside that group.

And if you ever again accuse me of favoring anything Bush I will hire a host of private detectives and a platoon of ninja to hunt you down and make you watch as many hours of Bush speeches as it takes to convince you to recant said slur.

6. Wait a sec,
Just above, didn't you accuse him of internalizing the main Limbaugh message?

What is this, dueling slurs?
