DETROIT -(Dow Jones)- Addressing Detroit business leaders Wednesday, ConocoPhillips (COP) Chief Executive James Mulva said the U.S. should consider a surcharge on less fuel-efficient vehicles and a rebate on more fuel-efficient models.
The auto industry has traditionally opposed this measure, which is known as a "feebate."
In wide-ranging energy-policy speech before the Detroit Economic Club, Mulva said the nation must slow down its "demand growth in transportation fuel," according to Mulva's prepared remarks.
"Over time, we could raise the efficiency levels on which the 'feebates' are based," Mulva said of the rebate idea.
