Warsaw - Poland's trade deficit ballooned in the first quarter of 2004, bolstered by demand for imports that has been fuelled by a strong economic recovery, according to the new official data.

The data, published on Friday by Poland's Central Statistical Office, showed the trade deficit expanding by more than 30 percent compared to figures from a year earlier.

Imports rose by 21 percent, while exports were up 18 percent.
