Here are 2 very good resources on surviving a collapsed economy
Happens more often than we read about, actually.

What Happens when Countries Go Bankrupt?
http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/11.08/bankrupt.html

and this one, I read 3 times...left me stunned.

Lessons from Argentina's economic collapse ( 1999-2000 collapse).

written by a man who learned the day to day survival lessons.
He brings up points I had never considered.

2. Have you checked out the home page of this site?
You may want to: http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/home.html

And this article: http://www.silverbearcafe.com/private/11.08/zombie.html

A blurb from the article:

Obama has been sold as is an intellectual champion of the people ordained by the University intelligentsia to rescue us from Christian idealism and lead us into a humanist utopia. Sadly, when you look at the plan he is actually presenting, it is almost impossible to distinguish it from that implemented by George W. Bush over the past 8 years.

When human beings lived in tribes, their leader was one of them; it was known the he had the best interests of the tribe in mind, and so was followed without question. This part of our nature is exploited easily by professionals who understand the way our minds function. If a person is presented as a leader, and as "one of us", it is our natural inclination to follow. This is psychological manipulation on a very base, primitive, emotional level.

These people don't know who Zbigniew Brzezinski is. They have never heard of the CFR, the Trilateral Commission, the Federal Reserve, PNAC, AIPAC, SPP, or the Brookings Institute. They have no conception of the history of the United States, the Middle East, or any other part of the world. They have been raised on Hollywood and the public education system. They are utterly defenseless.

All they know is that when they see Barack Obama, and hear him speak, it makes them feel warm inside. They chant slogans, relishing in obtusely vague terms like "hope" and "change". With smiles on their faces, they will follow this supposed leader in which ever direction he takes them.

This is a libertarian website...

6. Well, given that they also have articles on the Illuminati,..
...the evil global warming scam, and the 911 conspiracy, I think "fruitcake" is more descriptive. Not withstanding, the two articles in the OP seem to have some sound advice in them.

8. The sites links to many articles of all points of the spectrum.
Also links to Naomi Wolf, Red State Update videos.

Roubini links there in the money section.

I trust DU to use what you find, ignore the rest.
and thanks for not letting the point of my information get hijacked.

I was googling around for "economic collapse survival skills" and the above pages came up.

12. Well, the one on surviving in Argentina
relied a little too heavily on guns and ammo, although the author said it was a lot easier to go through dark nights with no power when he had someone with him and not just a gun.

The tips about the LED headlamps are also great ones.

13. I get the impression gun ownership is pretty high there
so having lots of hungry, armed people seems like a reasonable consequence of a collapse: Having a gun yourself seems like a reasonable response, and a discussion of what to go for seems like a good idea...

...and yes - I've had head torches for years, and wouldn't like to give up now. :) Pity no-one does a wind-up version, that would be perfect.

24. You would probably find the same subjects on this website, so perhaps it is "fruitcake" too.

3. Wow just wow. The best TEOTWAWKI site I've ever seen
Edited on Sun Nov-16-08 05:17 PM by tmfun
The Argintine experience is facinating. First time I've seen a real life example instead of speculation.

Book marked for MUCH future reading.

7. Not strong on acronyms, what's "TEOTWAWKI"?
TSHTF probably has something to do with shit and a fan but what are MBR, FAL, FMJ, JHP in the gun/police context??

11. The End Of The World As We Know It
A real BIG SHTF, (The Shit Hits The Fan)

Those acronyms are the favorites of survivalists.

MBR = Main Battle Rifle

FAL = Fusil Automatique Léger (Light Automatic Rifle), an example of the above.

FMJ = Full Metal Jacket (bullet)

JHP = Jacketed Hollow Point (bullet)

17. Thanks! And having read the 2nd link I guess I need to brush up on my handyman/repairing skills...
...which is an asset all around. Knowing how to solve differential equations wouldn't get me far in such an environment it seems...

4. Argentina was the living laboratory.
Welcome to the real World.

If you don't think it can happen here, you're to late. It's already live.

Obama will try his best to turn it around, but it's going to take time. In the mean time, grow eyes in the back of your head.

5. K&R
Everyone should read the 2nd link.
Very sobering commentary about realities of life after a collapse.

There are about 100 comments I would like add, but I think I'll just stand on the K&R.

9. No kidding.
Reading that was scary as hell. I can't imagine living in such a dangerous society. But then you have to take into account the huge slums that are in Buenos Aires. Crime was probably bad even before the 2001 collapse.

10. Bush has left us on the edge of a cliff. The one advantage we
have is a Democratic President and Democratic Congress who can work in tandem. But the hour is late and I for one am doing everything I can to get into survival mode.

Cuban experience of surviving through the "PO" Special Period should also be of interest, at least for the socially minded believers in statehood ("Big Gov"). Google if you can. :)

18. great read, thanks for posting
I spent several years traveling and living out of a backpack, and it helped me to learn much about surviving w/o the basic conveniences of modern society. I think it's an art that many have failed to learn here in the US.

In any case, I think there's a wealth of wisdom in these articles, much of which will probably be relevant here sometime soon.

21. We had a blast readng this last night.
The author has a great sense of humor, something we're all going to
need to get thru this. I've been especially fascinated with the author's
homeland Argentina, since their financial collapse was similar to what
we might be facing.

Already posted this on another thread, but in case you're still interested
this is what he survived.

22. There are many similarities between the US...
...and Argentina.

However, do people really believe that the US will experience a crash similar to
the one that Argentina experienced?

I guess it's just hard to believe.

When you read about the economic and political events that preceded the crisis in
Argentina, it's haunting.
