Misery at the pump offers at least one bright spot

MSA

Express-News - For motorists, the gas pump is a symbol of unending pain, but skyrocketing prices have produced at least one benefit.

U.S. traffic deaths are declining, and researchers attribute the drop to the increase in gas prices.

The same phenomenon occurred during the Arab oil embargo 30 years ago: With motorists driving less to conserve gas, there were fewer accidents on the road.

Motor vehicle deaths dropped 9 percent through May of this year, compared with the first five months of 2007, according to researchers with the National Safety Council.

Preliminary figures indicate some states have reported declines of at least 20 percent, the Associated Press reported.
