I've been hesitant to buy not knowing what form and where to get it...

4. Less silver going into photography
Major industrial use for silver will probably disappear over
next 20 years. Hard to be optimistic.

3. Find a reputable gold dealer.
They usually deal only in cash -- no credit cards or personal checks.

14. I strongly disagree

Reputable dealers WILL accept checks (though they will often make you wait for up to two weeks for your check to clear). In many cases, they will also take credit cards (but sometimes for an added service charge). It is the cash-only dealers that one should be particularly wary of.

16. yes I agree with you
Monex took a check - no problem. I think I had to wait for it to clear before I got the gold. They even sent me a pre-paid FedEx envelope to send it to them in! :D

I think they are OK myself!

5. Jewelry.
It's beautiful, wearable, and very portable. If you can find a jewelry store that's going out of business, you can get some exceptional values.

6. I am happy with this guy:
Art Levine (my Monex account rep)
1 (800) 949-4653
ext: 2854
Monex
They have been in business forever-
http://www.monex.com
He has clients all over the country and is
a real "straight shooter."
Very patient and helpful to the newcomers
in the PM investing. Will send you all the info
you need to open an account.
I talked with Art on and off for over a year
and finally decided to go with Monex.
I recommended him to another DUer and
he had a good experience.

11. Monex
I've been dealing with Monex myself. I have a nice guy there too and he called me in March when the price bottomed out and I bought the coins I'd wanted to buy earlier in the year at an excellent price. I would recommend Monex given my experience(s) with them.

I checked out a couple of other gold dealers and some aren't so honest I found. So, buyer beware!

8. Just a buyer be ware.
The deserter used saddam capture to cover the signing of Patriot 2. Part of patriot 2 allows for the classifying of coin dealers as financial institutions. As such the Gov can get records of who owns gold.

9. Here's an article

Gold-Dealers Conscripted to Spy on You?
by Alex Wallenwein, Editor & Publisher
The Euro vs Dollar Currency War Monitor
December 9, 2003

Just forget about buying and owning gold and other precious metals in privacy, as you have been able to do until now.

A new intelligence spending bill (HB 2417) has reportedly just passed Congress and is awaiting the President’s signature by this coming Saturday, December 13, 2003. Tucked inside that bill is a provision that allows the FBI to serve so-called "national security letters" on a broader range of "financial institutions." National security letters require these institutions to reveal their customers’ private financial as well as general information, including "tangible things.".

10. Buy a gold mine stock since the value of the stock will increase
faster versus gold itself. Of course, the converse is true as well.

15. One problem with gold mining stocks
is that it is often difficult to determine which ones are legit and which ones are bogus (remember Bre-X, anyone?). Another problem with stocks is that companies can often engage in "creative accounting" to hide their less-than-stellar performance until the insiders can dump. A third problem is that you get nothing tangible from stocks, while you do get something tangible from owning physical gold.

The downside to physical gold is that you have to make sure it's as advertised, and you have to store it somewhere.
