Daily U.S. Casualties 4/16/2004

As of Thursday, 687 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense. Of those, 493 died as a result of hostile action and 194 died of nonhostile causes.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 17; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, five; Ukraine, four; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and Poland have reported one each.

Since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 547 U.S. soldiers have died -- 382 as a result of hostile action and 165 of nonhostile causes, according to the military.

The latest deaths reported by the military:


A Task Force Olympia soldier died Wednesday in Mosul, Iraq from an acute heart attack.


A Task Force Danger soldier was killed Wednesday by an explosive near Samarra, Iraq.

Marine Cpl. Kevin T. Kolm, 23, Hicksville, N.Y.; died Tuesday from hostile fire in Anbar province; assigned to the 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Army Sgt. Christopher Ramirez, 34, Edinburg, Texas; killed Wednesday in an ambush; assigned to the 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.


Marine Lance Cpl. Brad S. Shuder, 21, El Dorado, Calif.; died Monday from hostile fire in Anbar province; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif.


Army Sgt. Maj. Michael B. Stack, 48, Lake City, S.C., died Sunday during combat operations in Anbar province; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group, Fort Campbell, Ky.


Army Staff Sgt. Victor A. Rosaleslomeli, 29, Westminster, Calif.; died Tuesday from an explosive near his vehicle in Iraq; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Germany.


Army Spc. Richard K. Trevithick, 20, of Gaines, Mich.; died Wednesday from an explosive near his vehicle in Balad, Iraq; assigned to the Army's 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany.
