U.S. toll at 224
By The Associated Press

As of Thursday, July 17, 224 U.S. soldiers have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq, according to the Defense Department's most recent figures. The British government has reported 42 casualties.

On or since May 1, when President Bush declared that major combat operations in Iraq had ended, 87 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to the Pentagon's most recent figures.

Here is information from the U.S. military on the latest U.S. casualties.

A U.S. soldier was killed Friday when a bomb detonated under a military convoy in which he was traveling west of Baghdad, the Army said.

A Navy sailor died Thursday of a non-combat gunshot wound in Hamishiyah, in southern Iraq, the military said Friday. It gave no further details on the sailor's death.
