"On Second Thought" (formerly Nova M) KNUV Padlocked in Phoenix?
From Phoenix New Times:

I'd been tipped off that KNUV 1190 AM, formerly the flagship station of the liberal Nova M radio network, and briefly, the home of Nova M's successor network, On Second Thought, had been padlocked. So I had to see for myself, as On Second Thought's driving force, Mike Newcomb, was apparently doing his afternoon show today as usual. At least, that's the way it sounded to someone who's not a regular listener of Newcomb's show.

But as you can see from the photo above, 1190 AM's offices are indeed chained up. The security guard for the building told me that the padlocking occurred today. When I asked why, he shrugged and said, "Something to do with the rent."

...In hindsight, Mike Newcomb's On Second Thought looks like a last ditch attempt to salvage what was left of the Drobnys shipwreck. The Radio Equalizer blog reported that "In an email message of February 17th from counsel for Nova M Radio, Inc. to Randi's entertainment attorney, Robert V. Gaulin, the company is said to have been advised to file for bankruptcy protection next week." Checking court records, I don't yet see Nova M's bankruptcy filing. Nor do I see one for Anita or Sheldon Drobny, yet.

So why is 1190 AM still broadcasting as of 9 PM Monday? According Sean Ryan, a producer at the station and briefly a GM at the station until he parted ways with the Drobnys in February, 1190 AM is currently on auto-pilot, playing "best ofs" until it ultimately goes dark. http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/bastard/2009/03/nova_ms_successor_on_second_th.php

2. Statement from Nancy
Edited on Tue Mar-03-09 10:41 AM by SharonRB
Hey All -

Nancy Skinner here. I just want you to know that we will be doing the Nancy Skinner Show live today from Detroit, and all is well.

There are so many good people out there trying to make progressive radio work. It really helps to know that you support us, even when times are tough.

I want to thank all the people who have encouraged me and written to say how much they enjoy the show. As you all know, it wasn't planned to debut this way, but it did.

We are rising to the challenge, and with every day we are ramping up to bring you great radio! I think you will be thrilled with how cool the show will be when we get there. And I appreciate your support in that process.

Yes - I do listen to all points of view, but my own is very clear. And yes, I do seek to change hearts and minds - and make people laugh in the process.

We're going through some crazy times right now, my friends. I hope I can earn the respect and loyalty that you have shown other hosts and I hope we can all work together to get through these hard times and experience that brighter future.

Thanks - and I'll see you on the air today!

Nancy

3. If the new network has the resources, they can still syndicate programs.
I think they currently just have Skinner and Malloy in syndication.

4. Absolutely, they can
It doesn't have to be done from that building in Phoenix. They don't really need it. Nancy got everything set up to do the show from Detroit without having to go through it.

5. Update -- still working through some technical issues
This is up at the On Second Thought site:

"Programming Note:

The Nancy Skinner and Mike Malloy Shows are being re-engineered as a result of the transfer of the base of operations.

It was our hope that the technical stuff was all worked out by airtime today but as it turns out, re-configuring network shows required a bit more work.

Today you’ll have “Best of Shows” again. The good news is the shows will both be live tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience and tune in tomorrow.

You know it’ll be great radio!"

6. Was Skinner Live Today (Wednesday)?
My real interest will be Mike Malloy, but if Skinner was still a 'Best of...' then I doubt Malloy will be live tonight - I listen via XM

7. Mike Malloy said that he was "on his own" tonight.
Meaning (presumably) that OST/Nova M was dead.

Air America's left with none of their original weekday programming (aside from the replay of Rachel's TV show that airs at 5 AM)

Leaving Dial Global (formerly Jones) as the only viable network with Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Bill Press, and as of this week, Thom Hartmann.

Problem is that they are not, by definition, a Liberal network. They also syndicate some of the worst right wing crap, like Neil Boortz. I suspect Randi Rhodes will eventually resurface at Dial Global as well. She's probably holding out until they agree to let her broadcast from Florida. They didn't seem to be too happy with Schultz broadcasting from Fargo, since he's been relocated to Washington DC lately.

Malloy made a vague reference to his "once and maybe future colleague" Thom Hartmann the other day, so maybe he's been talking to Dial Global as well? Admittedly though, I'm not sure if Mike and Schultz can coexist on the same network.

Sucks about Nova M though. I had thought the Drobnys had learned their lessons from having Air America swindled away from them, and were making better decisions this time around. :evilfrown:

9. Sounds like it's gone under, from everything I've heard.
Now I need to figure out what to do about my Nova M subscription.

This is sad. I'm still rooting for progressive radio.

10. From the notice on Malloy's site, the subscription will carry over if you want to continue
with Malloy's podcasts:

"We will ensure that existing podcast subscriptions are satisfied and there will be minimal interruption of service."

11. Oh, thanks! I appreciate it. Here's another odd thing:
www.onsecondthought.net goes to a blank page now, yet the Nova M streaming link is still streaming the programming (Thom Hartmann right now) - but has "On Second Thought" in the title bar.

I wish I could figure out what's going on.

Thank you for your help!

12. How did you even get to that link?
I've gotten a blank page all day. You can also stream from KTLK in LA -- Nancy's show has been coming in strong and clear all day.

13. Do you mean the onsecondthought.net link, or the Nova M link?
I have the Nova M link bookmarked: http://www.novamradio.com/live/stream.php

I can still stream the station from it. Right now the Nancy Skinner show is playing.

But when I type in www.onsecondthought.net I get a blank page.

14. Oh, you linked directly to the stream
not to the site. I never saved the stream URL by itself. I always went through the site. Interesting that that's still working, of course, most people won't know how to get to it.

15. I wonder why it still works
I'm streaming Mike Malloy now, and a little while ago he said that last week he was working for On Second Thought, and now he's working for himself.

Maybe Mike or Kathy will stop by here sometime and fill us in.

16. I'm confused, too
Thanks to your link, I was able to get there and was listening to Mike for a while. They kept saying it was the On Second Thought Network, which is gone, and they kept saying it was KNUV 1190, which is also defunct as far as I understand. This is very confusing, to say the least.

Mike and Nancy are each syndicating themselves, as he said he was on the show. They both set up new networks -- he in Atlanta and she in Detroit.
