Howard Dean Opens South Carolina Offices
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 09:58 AM by tsipple
South Carolina holds its primary in just under 90 days. From the Official Blog:

This weekend supporters from South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama will be canvassing across the state, spreading the message of this people-powered campaign. If you're in South Carolina or anywhere in the Southeast, come out and Canvass for Carolina.

In other SC news, Dean For America has hired a deputy state director and is in the process of hiring a director. Shortly we will open offices in Columbia and Charleston.

Dean supporters had Meetups last night in Anderson, Charleston, Columbia, Florence, Greenville, Greenwood, Myrtle Beach, and Sumter.

Howard Dean's field organization is on-the-ground and operating in more states than any other Democratic candidate.

(On edit: Corrected typo. Also this additional information...)

Dean named his South Carolina campaign chairperson this past January: State Representative David Mack III. (Announcement details here.) Dean has also advertised in the state. As of several months ago, Dean was reported to have raised more contributions (and small donor ones at that) from South Carolina than any other Democrat aside from nearby favorite John Edwards. (That was before the 3rd quarter, though. I haven't found the 3rd quarter numbers on that.) Although there's little recent polling, Dean appears to be tied for second in South Carolina and gaining momentum, despite the intense and repeated visits from rivals. Pros consider South Carolina a must-win state for at least three Democratic candidates: John Edwards, Wesley Clark, and Joe Lieberman. A Dean win the state would be a tremendous upset.

For more information on Dean's South Carolina efforts visit Dean for America - South Carolina Index.

1. Excellent!!!
Go Dean supporters!

The campaign is on the ground in all 50 states and several countries around the world with meetups.

It is so cool to know there are other Dean supporters at the grassroots level out doing the canvassing and petition drives everywhere in the country like we are here at home.

Thanks for the update tsipple
Very exciting to see one's candidate doing well.

Especially after supporting Ross Perot in '92 (I just took the 'KICK ME' sign off my ass yesterday).

4. No..
I've seen a lot of nastier things said about Dean here this morning that border on freeper speak. That was kind of funny.

5. No Need To
It's part of the restrictive convenant when you rent your offices. :-) :-)

(Yes, we can all laugh now.)

Explanation: Convenants were added to property deeds all over the country -- not just in the South -- to prevent minorities from acquiring property. These convenants were legal until the civil rights movement swept them away a few decades ago.

There are still some "wacky" convenants on property deeds that some long-dead owner added in fits of pique or just plain eccentricity. I happen to know of one strange one: residents in the town of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, don't actually own the land underneath their property. But they have a perpetual lease, and they can buy and sell rights to that lease. Why? Because, long ago, the town was organized and leased the land "until the river stops flowing and the sun stops rising." (Or something like that.)

If you want to live longer (or at least be remembered), add a strange convenant to your deed. That'll do the trick.

6. it's about time!
go to vote-smart.com and check out the offices of the other candidates. i was beginning to think that dean was going to try to do this presidential election thing with three or four offices.

other candidates have been on the ground in several states for months!

8. Much of Dean's "on the ground"
In states across the country has been through Meetups and on the 'net...where he is significantly stronger than any of the other candidates.

The offices seem a natural progression from that to increase the coordination of efforts.

Plus...Dean is notoriously tight about spending money, so I would expect that is part of it as well.

11. True
The Wa State ofc just opened a couple of weeks ago. At the previous meet-up, we were told that enough structure was already in place to put us about 6 mos ahead of how it's usually done.
