Jesse Jackson Jr. Throws His Support to Dean (NYT)
CHICAGO, Oct. 27 — Representative Jesse L. Jackson Jr. said Monday that he would soon endorse Howard Dean for the Democratic presidential nomination, telling a mostly black audience on the South Side of Chicago that Dr. Dean had "the best chance to be the next president of the United States."

"I'm not wasting my time with any more non-straight-talking candidates," Mr. Jackson said in introducing Dr. Dean, a former governor of Vermont, to a group of about 150 people at Chicago State University.

"I've seen him stand up for health care," he said. "I've seen him stand up for students. I've seen him stand up for ordinary Americans. I'm asking you to stand up for Howard Dean."

The support of Mr. Jackson, the son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, has been coveted by several presidential contenders in part because he carries some of the imprimatur of his father. He said after Dr. Dean's 45-minute question-and-answer session that he would "make it official in the next 7 to 14 days."

10. Hey John are you merging me with newsguyatl?
LOL newsguyatl + Amerikav60

I don't know if this was newguy's prediction, he said it would "transform the race" and I can't think of any endorsement that would do that except MAYBE Clinton. Even that one is questionable. I love endorsements (when they are for Dean of course) but I don't see them as transforming anything.

11. I knew it was only a matter of time
Until serious progress was made to debunk the silly "Dean doesn't appeal to black voters" nonsense that runs rampant on here. This is a great endorsement to make that point, and it WILL make a big difference in black support for Dean. There's a difference between endorsements from white politicians and from black politicians. The African American community pays much more attention to what the black politicians have to say. There's just more respect and admiration there. White politicians are a dime a dozen. Although black politicians are plentiful today, they are less inclined to have forgotten what matters to their causes. This is why this endorsement is such a good one.

12. note that Jackson is a colleague of Kucinich
They both belong to the Progressive Caucus which DK chairs...yet Jackson endorses Dean. Not to belittle Kucinich, but this should put to rest doubts about Dean's bona fides as a progressive.

Really? Note that the reason he gives is that Dean has "the best chance to be the next president of the United States." Not that he's progressive. In fact, nowhere in the article is he quoted as assessing Dean as progressive.

(edit) I note that he also calls Dean 'straight talking', which suggests to me that he has a special definition for that term.

I thought they had already marginalized Jesse over all the "goings on" that came out a few years ago .....hmmmmm....I think Jesse tends to make up his own definintions of a lot of things as he goes.....

wonder what Rev Al has to say about this?

25. Jr. isn't the deadweight his father is
As much as I would hate to live in a country that didn't have Jesse Jackson, I really didn't want to see him as president. His son, on the other hand, is good Presidential material and the fact he has endorsed Dean is a fantastic thing.

He doesn't bring with him all the entanglements and issues his father does. He is a respected lawmaker who has served his constituents and the State of Illinois very well.

27. It is pretty sad you have to resort to smearing
a person due to the fact he had the audacity to endorse someone other than Dennis. Dennis would be ashamed to have his name associated with what you just posted. I know Dennis, I like Dennis, and you sure are no Dennis. Shame on you.

32. never claimed to be Dennis and yes, I got the wrong Jesse..
so for that I apologize...I realized it after my editing time was up and haven't been back on til now.

Jesse Jackson SR & JR are both -IMHO- honorable men.
Gosh, dsc, I don't really think its up to you to tell me that Dennis or anyone would be ashamed of me....it wasn't a deliberate smear....I mixed up the father with son.... it was a mistake from a hasty post......you'd think if you can overlook Dean misleading NH voters, you could at least forgive me for an honest mistake...

Again... I don't see the necessity to feel shamed for expressing an opinion that does not agree with yours....so thanks anyhow but I don't accept your idea of "shame on me"...it is OK if we disagree, isn't it? I know there are others out there who don't agree with Dean.......

Peace

34. Regardless of the truth of the thing
it is still smearing to use adultery to try to take down a person who, all he did, was endorse someone you don't like. And yes that is shameful behavior.

38. "It is still smearing to use adultery to try to take down a person"
What are you talking about? DR said 'I thought they had already marginalized Jesse'. How is that 'smearing'? Explain it to us, would you? She didn't say 'he's no good because he shtupped some woman not his wife', 'his endorsement is worthless because he committed adultery', or 'he's a dirtbag because of his extramarital affairs'. All she said was that she thought the blue-noses had pushed him off the perch.

So explain her act of 'smearing' to us, okay?

Otherwise I think an apology is in order.

Edited on Tue Oct-28-03 05:13 PM by Desertrose
you are the one that mentioned it- not me....
What are you talking about..."taking down"? I was taking NO ONE down- you are the one who has been extremely judgemental in your posts to me.I only recall there was some really bad press for Jesse Sr..I never made a judgement on his action-nor labeled that action.... that is certainly not for me to do. I only remembered there was some bad press at the time and as it turns out...it was the son not the father who is considering endorsing Dean.

...and the truth of the thing?? are you talking about Dean here??

Do me a big favor....from now on- do NOT judge my behavior. Thank you.
Peace

40. sorry but how is this a cheap jab?
I think it is a cheap jab to identify the only governor to sign a civil unions bill as someone less than progressive.
I'm not saying Dennis Kucinich isn't a progressive. I'm not even saying he is somehow less of a progressive than Dean. I'm now just curious what exactly Howard Dean has to do to satisfy his nay-sayers that he embraces progressive values.

42. again, what did I say about Kucinich that constitutes a cheap jab?
(In the previously mentioned post. This one may be seen as "anti-Kucinich)

I said nothing about Kucinich at all. I just defended Dean, based on the evidence of Jackson Jr. and, now, a Major Owens endorsement that he is a progressive.

I'm not against Kucinich. I hope Dean or whoever, providing Kucinich himself doesn't win, offers Kucinich Secretary of Energy. And if Kucinich gets the nomination I'll gladly vote for him, unlike Joe Lieberman. But I can't support Kucinich. Not because he's "unelectable". Because his plan to withdraw from Iraq is unrealistic. His Peace Dept. is an ill-fated vanity project. Because his annoyance at the pro-progressive coverage of Comedy Central and his refusal to go on Hardball because, boo-hoo, Chris Matthews asks tough questions. (and yet DK supporters bemoan how the media ignores him. Maybe DK ignores the media) In ten years he may make a great President. But not now.

24. Big win for Dean
When I was in law school at Northwestern, Rep. Jackson Jr. came to speak at our school about his new book. He's a good speaker, but I have to say I'm against his idea to amend the Constitution in order to make education, work, and health-care a right. As Sen. Bumpers said at my graduation, once you open the door on that route, anything's game (just imagine the Christian Right's laundry list of proposed amendments!). But a good catch and step towards proving Dean can get African-American voters energized. Congrats Deanies!
