PA: Gray vs. Santorum in 2006?
This is snipped from a larger gossip column.

Political matter

Buzzing in local Democratic circles, besides that mayoral election: William H. Gray 3d is being pushed to run as a challenger to U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.), up for reelection in 2006. Gray was the third-ranking Democrat in the U.S. House in 1991 when he stunned the political world by quitting to head the United Negro College Fund.

1. There are way too many racists in PA for this to happen
It would take a major scandal on Santorum's part for a black man to be a viable candidate for a high-profile state-wide race in PA.

There are rumors that Barbara Hafer (the Republican State Treasurer) may switch parties and run against Santorum. She endorsed Rendell last year and she has just endorsed the Democratic candidate for Allegheny County Executive. She has been elected state-wide four times and hails from the smae county as Santorum.

4. I think that if Hafer wants to run
She should consider a House run first. She'd do well to run against Rep. Hart.

However, I think that Democrats have several people to run in 2006. Santorum is one of the Senate's most conservative members and is from a state that is far to the left of his beliefs. Some of the most prominent candidates that could take him on are Bob Casey, Jr. or Allyson Schwartz (who will hopefully be Rep. Schwartz by then.

2. No he wouldn't be a good candidate
I don't want to sound insensitive, but PA is not ready yet to elect a black man to the US Senate.

3. Run who ever can beat Sancrotum
He needs to be pushed out. He is a kid in a suit with no real human values. He is a disgrace to people in PA.
