Rep. Major Owens Endorses Howard Dean
Edited on Tue Aug-26-03 03:55 PM by CMT
Major Owens became the second major New York City Congressman to endorse Howard Dean for president. I consider this a major endorsement since Owens is one of my favorite members of congress.

"...Gov. Dean understands that a government which can spend $1 billion a week in Iraq can certainly appropriate the funds necessary to fund adequate schools and provide health care for all families."
--Major Owens.

6. Great for Dean
It's good to be a fair sport. At least if Kerry doesn't win, other candidates will have strong backings to carry on the election.

11. Owen's speech will give Dean the largest boost from this event.
Dean can win the New Yorker primary with the support of Brooklyn voters.

I was also impressed by the fact that former Governor Weicker is now supporting him. When independent Jim Jeffords and New Hampshire Republican Jane Kelley are included in the picture, it is exciting that moderate Republicans and Independants in the northern and western states could become a new base for the Democrats with Dean as the nominee.

12. Maybe he can sway the Black Congressional Caucus to back
Dean. That would help with the "Dean diversity challenge".
Dean has picked up a lot of House support in the last week - Az Raul Grivalja, Nadler, Owens - all minorities that will help the campaign in outreach.

13. At the Chicago Event
I was slightly depressed that there weren't more minority faces in the crowd. Dean needs to do some outreach into minority communities soon. I do believe his message will resonate well with minorities, but they have to be able to hear it for them to support him.

14. Black Caucus won't back anyone
They are currently divided. I believe members have endorsed Braun, Deam, Edwards, Graham, Kerry, Kucinich, and Sharpton. Braun has the backing of Danny Davis and Bobby Rush of Illinois. Dean has Major Owens of New York. Edwards has Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas, Albert Wynn of Maryland and Mell Watt and Frank Ballance of North Carolina. Graham has Corrine Brown, Kendrick Meek, and Alcee Hastings of Florida. Kerry has Gregory Meeks of New York and Harold Ford, Jr of Tennessee. Kucinich has Diane Watson of California. Sharpton has the support of Edolphus Towns of New York. I don't believe that Gephardt or Lieberman have any support from the Black Caucus.

15. Although James Clyburn (SC) hasn't formally endorsed anyone yet...
it is widely assumed that he supports Gephardt.

Note that Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the chairman of the CBC, hasn't made an endorsement yet.
