Sharpton Blames Lack of Coverage on Race
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 05:25 PM by D__S
How can anyone take this guy seriously? Six other candidates (not counting Dean and Kerry), and none of them are making excuses for the lack of coverage; despite the fact that Dean and Kerry have been getting all the attention.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- Veteran black activist Al Sharpton
charged Wednesday that the news media are
dismissive of his presidential campaign because
newsrooms are overwhelmingly white.

"I think when you look at the lack of diversity in the
newsrooms, when you look at the lack of diversity from
the editors and those in power, then you see them as
automatically dismissive of anything that is not like
them, which is white males," said Sharpton.

"I think we've seen some very blatant racial insensitivity
in the coverage of this race so far," Sharpton said in an
interview with The Associated Press.

Sharpton complained that former Vermont Gov. Howard
Dean has been virtually anointed the hot candidate for the Democratic
presidential nomination in 2004 -- a case, he said, of a white-dominated media
focusing on a middle-age white man.

2. Randi Rhodes had a theory last week....as far as talk shows go,
she said they put on Sharpton more than anyone else because outlets like FOX use him as the "face" of the Democratic party.....people like Mosley-Braun can't get on, nor Kucinich, nor Edwards...She was talking about how things are booked...and how many times they are "booked" then cancelled for "breaking news."

I think she's onto something......

a middle-aged white man who got himself elected to a major political office - unlike you, al. a middle-aged white man who has led a life of accomplishment - not a lifetime of whining like you, al.

4. sickening
google news results

"bob graham" 4610
"howard dean" 4370
"john kerry" 4360
lieberman 4110
gephardt 4010
"john edwards" 2830
kucinich 2110
sharpton 1630
moseley braun 991

You're right. There's no pattern here. And if you read those 1630 stories about Al Sharpton, hardly any of them will be about he also appeared at an event, or also raised funds, or also is running for the nomination. None of the stories will dismiss his chances of winning non-black votes. All of the professional journalists take him seriously, and quote his positions on important issues. They ask him tough questions, and report his answers. Just as they do with all the others. They don't treat him any differently than any of the others. There is no perceivable bias. It's all in Sharpton's mind.

It's sickening. I agree. It's just sickening.
