Long Island, Suffolk County Special Election, 3RD District Ends in Defeat

(08/05/03) SUFFOLK COUNTY - On Tuesday, Republican Peter O'Leary earned 53.9% of the votes in defeating Democrat Carol Bissonette who earned 46.1%, in a special election for the seat formerly held by Republican Peter Towle. Towle resigned from the 3rd District legislative seat after pleading guilty to accepting bribes and misusing campaign funds.

Peter O'Leary recently retired from the Suffolk County Police Department after 35 years. Two of O'Leary's priorities are creating a county inspector general and funding for a fully operational 7th precinct in North Shirley with a crime control unit.

The 3rd District includes the communities of Coram, Medford, Bellport, Yaphank, Center Moriches, Shirley and Mastic Beach.
