In Ky., Clooney Has Big Lead in Rival Camp’s Polls
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 07:58 PM by NewJerseyDem
This news suprises me. This is an extremely conservative district where even Ken Lucas, who is the most conservative democrat in the House, struggled to win. Clooney is more liberal on issues like gun control and I would think that the Clooney name would hurt here.

(Also, Democrat Ken Salazar leads republican Bob Schaffer 43-32 in the colorado senate race in a poll mentioned later in the article)

http://www.rollcall.com/issues/49_99/atr/4906-1.html

Two polls conducted in the open-seat race for Kentucky’s 4th district show former television anchor Nick Clooney (D) with a double-digit lead over 2002 Republican nominee Geoff Davis.

Clooney received 46 percent to Davis’ 31 percent in a Cooper & Secrest Associates survey of 504 likely general election voters done for the Democrat’s campaign.

The poll was in the field Feb. 17-19 and had a 4.4 percent margin of error. The campaign just released the results this week.

In a Tarrance Group poll done for Davis, Clooney led 52 percent to 36 percent.

1. Rosemary Clooney was very beloved in Kentucky no matter the politics

She continued to be a regular in her home town til her death. I suspect that has far more to do with it than political identity.

She was a benefactor to the town where she grew up...a great lady...Nick is getting a push from her...the Clooney's are not regarded as Hollywood liberals in Kentucky...they are Kentuck's!

2. One Seat Down, two to go
That's good news. We already took the 6th District back with Ben Chandler's win over right winger Alice Forgy Kerr,

Now if we could only get Louisville out of Anne Northup's slimy paws.

4. Not technically a pickup
The seat is currently held by Ken Lucas, a congressman with a D after his name. He usually votes with democrats on procedural matters but it currently the most conservative democrat in the House most likely. He is retiring and is enthusiastically backing the more liberla Nick Clooney's campaign. However, Lucas didn't vote for Pelosi to become Speaker and instead voted present, so Lucas isn't entirely a democrat, but Clooney would be.

Thanks for sharing the good news, NewJerseyDem.

As a southwestern Ohioan, I'm in-tune with Kentucky politics, and this is one beautiful development.

7. I wish Dems were better at finding candidates like Clooney --
attractive, with special appeal to the voting constituency. I wish we had one political czar (like Rove in some ways, but not others), with his or her eye on both the big picture, and the political situation down to each Congressional district.

8. Clooney was a news anchor in Cinci area...
.. for many years. (The viewing area includes Northern KY). A very likable, sincere and personable man with a revered name in KY. His lead doesn't surprise me at all. I lived in Cinci for decade (in the 70's) and Nick was very popular even then.
