W.House Sees 'Gutter Politics' in Bush Guard Flap
By Randall Mikkelsen

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House, stung by election-year charges that President Bush shirked Vietnam War-era military duties, accused opponents on Wednesday of "trolling for trash" for political gain and ruled out the blanket release of medical or disciplinary records.

Bush said on Sunday he would provide records on his service for the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, but critics said a release on Tuesday of pay and service records fell short of full disclosure.

"If there's new information that comes to light, that's relevant to the issue, we will let you know," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan. Bush's comments on Sunday referred only to the release of pay stubs or other records that could document his attendance and service, he said.

White House officials said the National Guard was sending the president's personnel file to the Pentagon, and the White House would also obtain it.

Bush said in an NBC interview broadcast on Sunday that although he did not volunteer for Vietnam, he was proud to have served in the Guard and would have gone to Vietnam had his unit been called up.
When asked whether he would agree to release his "entire files," he said, "Sure. Yeah."
The Democratic Party said the records released on Tuesday failed to clear up Bush's absences, and the MoveOn.org voter group, which is opposed to Bush, said the president should also release his medical and disciplinary records.
