Could Tom Delay be defeated in his own district?
I have heard the demographics are not that solidly in his favor.

1. Wouldn't that be great! I can't for the life of me imagine that
his policies have benefited all of Texas, just the wealthy few. He is the next repub, next to * that I would LOVE to see sent home.

2. He's been repeatedly re-elected...
... so whatever you've heard on the demographics is clearly wrong, based on the real results.

Truth is, Sugar Land is full of religious nuts, and that's where his votes come from.

He does damned little for his district--except fight a light rail system to Houston--which would really screw up the demographics of his district. (!)

Could he beaten? Yes--by someone even crazier and more fraudulent than he is. I'm beginning to think that Sugar Land must be the Love Canal of Texas--that there's something in the tapwater that drives people to vote for the biggest asshole around....

His opponent in 2002 ran a reasonable, decent campaign focusing on the rail issue and got something like 35% of the vote.

In short, whatever DeLay's got, the people in Sugar Land like it. Gawd help `em.

Want him out? Better hope for a massive heart attack in the midst of a religious tirade....

Cheers.

4. To quote Jonathan Edwards through Jim Morrison...
... "you CANNOT PETITION the Lord with prayer."

*sigh*

If it were so, he would have been gone long ago, along with any number of slimy characters in public office.

No deus ex machina here. Just ordinary American politics.

6. 2 Dems Taking Aim at DeLay

"Environmental attorney Richard Morrison of Sugar Land and Erik Saenz of Houston have filed to run as Democrats in the District 22 race."

from:

Check Morrison out here:

Saenz, a 2003 Dallas Mayoral Candidate, does not yet have a website, at least that I could find.

7. Election outcomes
Edited on Sat Jan-10-04 04:11 PM by mcd1982
I know with the new redistricting that Delay's district has become a bit more Democratic, but I'm at work and can't access the info to his new district to see it's makeup. However, here are his races for the past decade:

2002: 63%R vs. 35%D
2000: 60% vs. 36%
1998: 65% vs. 33%
1996: 68% vs. 31%
1994: 73% vs. 24%
1992: 69% vs. 31%

The average of the races is 31% -- not a very Democratic district. I doubt Jesus himself could win as a Democrat -- the Republicans would probably think his name was Hispanic! ;-)

Like I said, I belive the new district is a tad more Democratic, probably 35-40% or so. I'm afraid we will be stuck with him for a long time...

8. New district...
"The new 22nd's Republican "performance" score - an average of the vote shares received by statewide Republican candidates in the 2002 elections - is 66 percent."

9. Even so, no Republican Congresscritter or Senator
should run unopposed. Ever.

We'll never get all the seats, but giving voters in these districts a way to see actual Democratis up close and personal will do much to chip away at the Fox News and fundie stereotypes.

And sometimes--just sometimes, they either win or bring out enough Dems to decide other races in the Dems' favor.

10. Isn't Rep. Nick Lampson considering running against DeLay?
He'd be the strongest candidate we could imagine, and, as a sitting congressman, he'd have access to campaign contributions (not to mention that if there were a chance he could knock out DeLay, every donating Democrat in the country would be giving him money).

11. I think Lampson will run
His campaign website certainly makes it seem like he wants to run against DeLay. However, it is a bit outdated so I don't know what his final decison will be. Lampson seems to really want to get rid of DeLay and if he doesn't have an open district that he can run in and win, I think he will challenge DeLay. His victory is unlikely but it will definitely make DeLay have to fight a little.

14. I saw Nick Lampson at the Galveston Cty Dems meeting last month
and he didn't seem to be leaning toward running in 22.... but didn't say definitively.

12. Delay's District & Lampson
Edited on Mon Jan-12-04 02:30 PM by mcd1982
Delay's 2000/2002 District was 67%R - 33%D.

The 2004 District will be 65%R - 34%D.

And yes, I do believe Cong. Lampson is now in Delay's district. I doubt Cong. Lampson could win it, but I agree it will be out best shot...

13. Help Richard Morrison Open hisCampaign Headquarters
I don't live in his district, but I signed up so I could volunteer. I got this email from him today:

Taking on Tom Delay

Hi, I wanted to write and update everyone on the progress of our campaign to unseat Tom DeLay. I'm officially on the Democratic Primary ballot for the nomination and need your support in the primary. It's critical that we build a strong campaign during the primary so we'll be in good position to take on Tom DeLay in the general.

Today I'm opening my campaign headquarters in Richmond Texas. The address is 1116 Morton St, Suite E, Richmond, Texas 77469. And I'm looking for volunteers to help man the office and conduct voter outreach. We'll have an official opening party and volunteer meeting on January 26, at 7pm. To the best of my knowledge this is the first time an opponent of DeLay has opened a headquarters in the district.

Many of you have already signed up to support my campaign, some have contributed your hard-earned dollars. Some of you have met me at a rally or political event. Thank you so much for your support. Thanks to you this challenge seems less overwhelming every day.

This campaign isn't about me, but about you and whether or not you've had enough of Tom DeLay abusing his power and ignoring the interests of the people of District 22. And, as the most powerful man in the US Congress, Tom DeLay's power-mongering and influence-peddling hurts Americans everywhere. You can help in several ways:

1. Please register to vote if you aren't already. Every vote for me from a constituent of District 22 will send the message that it's time for Tom DeLay to leave. Even if you aren't in District 22, every person voting helps create a better democracy and a better country. Texas residents can click the link below to register:

http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/voter/reqvr.shtml

2. Please donate to my campaign. I'm not going after thousands of dollars from corporations who want to buy my vote in Congress -- I want to make this an effort by the people, and every single dollar helps. Remember, it's not only the total amount raised but the total number of people who give to the campaign that matters.

3. Please visit my websites, and learn more about me and what Tom DeLay is doing. When you read the news articles about his deplorable activities, you will be as horrified as I am that this man is allowed to represent us in the US House of Representatives.

http://www.takingontomdelay.com

4. Please forward this email to your family and friends. Help us get the word out that Tom DeLay's reign of power must end, and it starts here.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, and thank you for your support. I believe that together, we can show Tom DeLay the door.

Richard Morrison
