Kucinich once a male chauvenist?
I'm sure he's not now, but you know how he mentioned the mistake he'd made of firing that police chief on tv back when he was mayor? Well, I was channel flipping and I think it was on MSNBC that they had the police chief. He seemed to imply that the reason he was fired was because he wanted to hire women police officers -- which had been fine in San Francisco, he said (wonder if he came from there?) -- and he was told by the mayor's office that the people of Detriot wanted to see a man when they called for the police.

1. I don't much care
Mostly I'm annoyed that Kucinich is still in the running for President. Spoilers are never good for their cause (Thanks for the 8 years of Bush, Nader)...but in primaries, especially, we should be concentrating on the best man to beat Bush. Kucinich, Moseley-Braun, Sharpton, and Edwards need to be out now.

Whoops. Threadjack.

Anyway, I don't think people really care about minor things like that (unless a talking head tells them to care, but that's beside the point.)

6. Back up on Edwards
Polls show him running agains Bush, just a couple of points below Gep. Kerry and Clark...Remember this, a Dark Horse is going to win the nomination....Should Dean win, he is definately going to have to have Clark and Edwards in his plan to carry the south.

4. No
I lived in Cleveland when Dennis was mayor. He brought in Richard Hongisto from San Francisco to be Chief of Police. I don't recall the exact reasons for the firings, but it didn't have anything to do with hiring women. Hongisto was widely regarded as the most progressive sherriff in the country when he was hired. And besides, there were women on the police force before that.

His term as mayor was marred mainly by appointing inexperienced people to top posts. Two worst appointments were the Grdina sisters, one of whom was safety director, in charge of the Police Dept. and Fire dept.

I think he's learned a lot since then.

5. Yes, that was the name. Probably just his interpretation then.
But it wasn't unusual in the early 70s for people to be gung-ho for civil rights and look blank about the idea of women's rights.

8. I don't know the publicly announced
reason for the firing, but I don know the real reason for it.

Hongisto was continuously making crude and sexist remarks to the safety director. He did it enough times and with enough warnings about it that Dennis had enough. I'd say that firing says the exact opposite about whether Dennis was a chauvanist and also speaks of his willingness to do right by his employees. Whether she was a good safety director or not, he wasn't going to sit back and allow her to be abused simply because she was a young, attractive woman.

10. It did surprise me when I heard it. I'd known about the firing, but
assumed that most (all?) police chief types would be to the right of Dennis, so I was wondering if there was more to the story. Thanks, diamondsoul. Did you see my reply about the uranium?

11. Yes, I did, thanks.
My concern about that was from a relatively recent interview he did. I saw it in a thread in General Discussion before they split GD into two forums, so you may be able to find it. There were a lot of people a bit flipped out because the seeder post referred to it as DU. LOL

I'd hunt it down for you but just now I have a tone of e-mails to send out since I've had about 20 volunteer calls in the past two days.

9. Hongisto has nursed a grudge
over that firing ever since, and NO it was NOT because he wanted to hire female officers. Hell if even half the remarks he's quoted as making to the safety director are accurate they couldn't pay me enough to work under Hongisto!
