GWB type II : THE FREE MARKET VIRUS INFECTING THE WORLD

It appears many within G20 remain suffering from the symptoms of GWB type II. This virulent infection has spread throughout the world with its primary symptoms of hallelujah for economic growth, belief in borrow and spend, rabid free marketism, hip hip hooray for Wall Street, incessant deregulation, supply and demand, boom and bust, and the sacred cow of globalization, looking over its increasingly paranoid shoulder at the billions of people who are ultimately going to suffer the long term consequences. There is a deadly complication of what appears to be a skull and crossbones disease, rivaling only the deadliest viruses, such as ebola and bubonic plague, in its socio-psychological impact on vast segments of the human population. That deadly complication is the increasingly universal exhortation that what is good must be profitable and what is profitable must ultimately be good. GWB type II is a virus that infects the human brain rendering clear encomic and socio-psychological thinking impossible. It has brought total environmental destruction, and poisoning of what were potable water, clean soil, and breathable air, to areas of the world that had no real concept of pollution. It has brought the total destruction of traditional ways of life, and social customs, restructuring life according to a shadow of the American mass production factory model, with the promise that this brings “freedom”. Huge migrant populations, uprooted from vast distances, are forced into servitude to make things that they themselves never believed that they would ever need. Now GWB type II has them all believing faithfully that they need such things and that they are now “free”. All of that in less than a decade. It is a remarkable record for the spread of an increasingly virulent organism that as of yet has no known and effective cure. G20 has met and there are no clear indications that they have summoned the doctors to properly diagnose and research how to stop the spread of the illness and its devastating symptoms as it continues to ravage the world and threaten the entire future of humanity. It seems G20 has learned nothing much from the failures of the twentieth century.

Science liberated from ideological underpinnings, putting aside all ideologies, looking at the facts of human life as it is observable, measurable, in terms of what we know and what we can learn about humanity, can both diagnose the disease, and find cures to its devastating effects. We know the disease began in America, and was readily and quickly transmitted to Europe. Resistance in the former USSR and China, as well as in some other areas, was more pronounced, but the infection could not be stopped. China is particularly in peril and suffering increases every day. Similar to how small pox devastated the native population of North America, when Europeans invaded here, GWB type II has spread into China, and is having as disasterous an effect. The beads and blankets being traded for Chinese mass produced goods, are now electronic trinkets, games, other useless things that eat away at what little energy and time is left after long days of repetitive motions to manufacture those same sorts of things. Has history taught us nothing at all and must we repeat the errors of colonialism as it was practiced in the past, bringing our social, psychological, political and economic diseases to foreign populations, denying them their own wisdom and truth, and deprecating their ways of life in favor of our own sick and largely dysfunctional society and its overvalued and baseless beliefs ? GWB type II is quick to infect and destroy what it fails itself to comprehend. It attacks, overwhelms, and takes over whatever differs from itself, replicating itself. It is viral. It is automatic in its effects in the same ways as the lowest form of living organism is automatic and undiscerning.

World leadership failed when they defined development as increased production of goods for maximum profit that a globalized market competitively bear. They were infected with GWB type II. Fiercely brutal competition, lack of regard for socio-psychological impact, placing profit margins above all other values, short term gains rather than long term improvement in the human condition have usurped local wisdom, any differing of ideas, and local power. This was the effect of GWB type II. Wisdom and truth are in rapid decline with parrotlike repetition of blind belief increasingly coerced from enslaved ignorance. This too is GWB type II.

The doctors, once summoned in, will tell you what health used to be like. GWB type II has made you forget what it once was to feel healthy. Enterprises such as factories existed, once upon a time, in that now nearly fictional fantasy world of a healthy society, to provide jobs. The ideal was to provide “good work” but we rarely came near to that 1960s originated theory about improved health. You had to assert other values, other than profit, and ahead of profit, if you were to achieve that. Unfortunately in the decline into sickness, even prior to the outbreak of GWB type II, much of that was forgotten in the struggle for improved margins. This being even more true in distant parts of the world, than it became in places we refer to as “home”.

Good work, when the concept came out in the 1960s, given its most prominent voice by E.F. Schumacher, in his writings on that subject, was not profit defined. It was defined in terms of higher values, and in terms of what was perceived as a healthier and more functional society. It was aimed at real progress, with wisdom and truth as guiding principles. It was the an antithesis to the world of GWB type II. Such good ideals, and deeply and carefully thought through concepts, are not what GWB type II has chosen to export to the world as its best. It has chosen to do the opposite, as a virus invariably tends to do. It brings illness, not health.

The doctors will tell you what constant patterns of increasing upheaval of lives, financial and social uncertainty, and increased pressures of ideological conformity do to people. That is you summon in the doctors. Many within G20 prefer ignorance. They want to lock the door and not let the doctors in. They are afraid of the doctors pronouncements as to how sick they have really become and how their sickness is affecting humanity as a whole. The doctors might put them into isolation wards, to try to stop the spread of the illness.

The doctors will tell you how the social element of work, and how society has been adversely affected by the illness. It is sometimes insidious in its depersonalizing, alienating, effects upon the majority who do not even recognize the changes in themselves, as their lives are insidiously and gradually changed. They scarce remember what now seems the fictional fantasy world where human relationships could exist outside the profit motive, in terms of other values, and where there was more than a quasi professional and professional commerce between persons increasingly pervading every area of human interaction. When GWB type II infects it gradually reduces all values to the value of profit. Nothing else tends to remain. Everything else is slowly broken down to not much more than a social, psychological, corpse.

Blind belief in an ideology, overvalued ideas, and use of any means of coercion and convincing to force those ideas on others, leads the doctors to consider the value of incarceration in a mental institution as a danger to self and others. The insane often do not realize their own insanity. GWB type II is that type of illness. It does bring clarity of thought, and well considered action. It does coerce, force, and brain wash with its own overvalued ideas, accepting nothing else and nothing less from anyone. It tends to destroy those first who recognize anything of the illness and who try to give any voice in opposition to its virulent spread. In the era of GWB type II you had no choice but to believe that infection with GWB type II is the epitomy of a healthy attitude and a healthy system of beliefs, guiding all of your words and actions. The infected condition was the only condition being tolerated, promoted, accepted, in socially engineered, psychologically manipulated, and economically chastised terms. Quickly the majority accepted that there is no choice but to live infected, sick, lives, declaring themselves “healthy” fully infected with GWB type II.

Call in the doctors. They know the illness. They know all the symptoms. There is still chance that the world can be cured, before everyone, even the small number of suffering outsiders, somehow chance immunized against the disease, are perished too. Many of the doctors are of that number.
They wait for their day, to fight the illness, quietly and secretly measuring its devastating effects, against what they know about the good. The good as what is good for people. What improves their quality of life, and what makes for a truly functional, good, society. What serves socio-psychological wellness, and how economics is integrally related to wellness. The doctors are waiting to be called in. The patient is dying. The virus remains unchallenged. GWB type II is slowly killing the world and destroying its humanity.
