Imus Apology Doesn't Stop Protests
Posted: Sunday, 08 April 2007 9:02PM

NEW YORK, N.Y. (AP) -- The chorus of protests over a racially charged comment made by radio host Don Imus is getting louder.

Today the New Jersey NAACP president is calling for the broadcaster's resignation or firing and Jesse Jackson says he's planning a protest in Chicago tomorrow. ~snip~

"I accept his apology, just as I want his bosses to accept his resignation," said the Rev. Al Sharpton. He promised to picket Imus' New York radio home, WFAN-AM, unless the veteran of nearly 40 years of anything-goes broadcasting is gone within a week. ~snip~

The National Association of Black Journalists, the editor-in-chief of Essence magazine and a New York sports columnist joined the chorus against Imus. ~snip~

2. Totally agree MadMaddie. I'm surprised that many are writing this off and his usual awful radio
schtick. This was one of the most offensive things to be spread over radio and tv airwaves. He should resign disgracefully or be fired, whichever comes first.

3. Its worse than that, it is part of a consistant thread of profanity and racist
garbage that comes from this man... against African Americans, against Arabs...
also sexist.

7. This is the fine line that the FCC (if it were working as it should)
would step in and fine for these kind of actions.

They suspended him for two weeks.

4. When he's truly sorry, he'll resign
Don Imus and his racist, misogynist, xenophobic buddies (birds of a feather and all that) have a well-documented history of similar remarks. Likewise, MSNBC and CBS Radio have a well-documented history of distancing themselves from Imus, yet never holding him accountable for spouting inappropriate, crude, hurtful comments. Repeatedly. This is nothing new, but it's time that people of color, women, and serious, socially-aware people of good conscience take action to let Don Imus know his time is up! He's had his moment in the sun, and now it's time to slink off into the sunset. If America wants to move forward, we must search ourselves, be honest with ourselves, and acknowledge where we are wrong. It is morally wrong to offend others with words, and NOBODY should be given free rein to use public airways to demean, degrade, and denigrate young women who represent themselves, their families, and their university in a remarkably positive manner. To Don Imus, I say, "Hit the road, Jack! And don't you come back, no more, no more, no more! Hit the road!"

8. Hi fellow GA girl!
Being a socially conscious, serious woman of color, I cannot even express how disgusting and hurtful his words have been. My heart goes out to the Rutgers team and I'm proud of the way in which they have carried themselves through this mess that Imus has made in his pants. I have emailed Imus and MSNBC. Next, it will be CBS radio. It's easier for many to marginalize these hateful comments, talk about free speech, and say that it's only his radio schtick. I do not agree. Just like Michael Richards, these words are in his heart. His heart is evil. He must go, along with his on-air crew of ghouls.

Good riddance to them all!
