10 Reasons to go to church tomorrow
Edited on Sat Apr-10-04 10:12 PM by Taverner
Regarding a post I saw here, thought Id write this down. Again, if you're athiest or agnostic, there ARE churches for you (in San Francisco, the Athiest Association meets on Sundays - that, by definition, is a church.)

Anyway...here we go...

1 - Churches used to be the great meeting place for the left. Many great leftist causes were born out of churches. Abolition, Women's Sufferage, Workers Rights and Civil Rights all had religious ties.

2 - The left leaving the churches has tilted the political tide towards those who remain, the Right Wing.

3 - Free wine and croutons/wafers tomorrow! (sorry, had to say it )

4 - Easter Sermons usually deal with rebirth and rejuvenation, something the left needs to hear in todays world.

5 - Women need to raise their voices more in churches - start tomorrow!

6 - Gays need to raise their voices more in churches - start tomorrow!

7 - If you have kids, this is your chance to show them that God is, indeed a liberal.

8 - Unitarian churches take time to expose you to other religions that celebrate this time of year.

9 - Nothin' looks finer than a woman in Easter Sunday gear! (sorry, I'll be good :) )

10 - Show up if only to point out how misanthropic Passion is, and to show them what REAL Christian passion is!

20. awful hard to do when all of them where I am are reactionary.
All of the churches in my area are extremely Reich-wing.

I'd rather sleep in my bed than sleep in a pew hearing Republican BS.

a lesson on the evils of consumerism and exploitation of the poor through buying goods at wal mart.

Im not sure Ill be asked to teach again. Several people walked out. of course a surprisingly high number of people (most that i didnt know) came up to me afterwards so excited that they were not actually the sole silent liberal at church.

Honestly, I really do think WE need to take back the churches.

Moses is our guy too...

7. So is Martin Luther, even if he did have some regressive
moments here and there, the sum total of his life was on the progressive side.

What is the difference between Unitarians and Unity churches?

9. diversity
Edited on Sat Apr-10-04 10:36 PM by lyrical di
DU should encompass diversity. This means atheists should respect others, too. We're out here demanding everyone has rights of religion, speech, etc. If someone doesn't like your topic, there are plenty more out there.

I'm not saying the 10 reasons not to go to church are discriminating, but that we need to keep having the broader variety of discussions here.

16. i wanna know how a group meeting on Sunday defines a church
I live about as far as you can get from San Fran (Florida) but by your little blurb, it seems like you think just because it is a group formed around principles of faith (or lack of) and it meets Sundays, that it is a church. I'm an agnostic myself. I am not trying to be confrontational, I just wonder if they consider themselves a church and if they would want others to call them a church.

17. I've just expanded the definition of church
It sounds a little cold and impersonal if I say "10 reasons to go to a meeting place tomorrow"

My main point is that churches were points of organization in the past, and the left would always mobilize there. Now the right does, and it's time to take them back (the organization places, not the right)

18. oh ok
Well when you said "that, by definition, makes it a church", I didn't know it was your definition verson others. I have no problem with people meeting up and becoming a more cohesive community. I just have a problem when it only happens on Sundays and when many of those who attend feel obligated to do so. Obligated in the sense that it has to be on sunday b.c god rested on that day (or whatever the background of the Sabbath it). Whats wrong with Tuesday?

19. Because
It's a good way for one parent to get the kids in the car, while the other goes into Easter bunny mode hiding eggs. Then when you get home, everyone gets all jacked up on jelly beans and chocolate eggs.

Plus, mommy has to dress up and look cute every once in awhile. (And if we're extremely lucky tomorrow, some teenie tiny spark of spirituality from the minister will invade our souls. I'm trying to be open to the prospect anyway.)

Except we're getting further leftist and our church is getting further to the right (oh yes, I got a James Dobson spam crapola one from someone two days ago). I think next Fall, we're going back to Unitarian land. I could deal with Quakers I think, but there isn't one close by.
