I suppose you could say the difference between a Purple Heart and PBR would be choosing the slow death or the quick one. My initial post was in jest though. I should have noted it.

on how the citation is written. You may have heard the old story of a cook who was awarded a Purple Heart for receiving a "shell fragment" in the eye. He tripped while carrying a tray of eggs.

Kerry's Purple Hearts incite curiosity more than admiration.. 3 Purple Hearts in less than 4 months without a single day of duty being lost? It has got to make you wonder. that is not to say the awards were not legitimate. If he sustained combat related injuries in a hostile fire zone, he deserved them, but the reality that almost any injury can be written up to justify that particular award. I think I read that B.G. Burkett, the author of "Stolen Valor" is looking into the issue.

Has he ever produced his medical records detailing the nature of his wounds? I don't really care, but if he is going to tout that as a campaign tool, someone is going to scrutinize it.

There is another aspect to consider, as well. Fortunately for him, MOST people won't look at it from this angle, but... We always referred to the Purple Heart as the "I forgot to duck" badge. Having too many of those in such a short period of time tends to create doubts about someone's judgment.

Does anybody here know the particulars of why he was awarded those Purple Hearts? I have a feeling it might not be in his best interest to emphasize those.

10. From what I understand...
He was serving on a navy patrol boat in the rivres of Vietnam. Same as my father. It was a risky business to say the least, getting shot at from unseen locations while sitting on an SMT (slow moving target), and stories of sailors getting wounded, bandaged and returning to service immediately were not uncommon.

21. That is an urban legend, about Kerry's being awarded
bogus medals during his service. Check out the www.snopes.com site. Go to "Politics", then "John Kerry". Then read.

Please don't propagate that silly stuff some more.

15. Troll...?
Why do you suggest that? I asked a couple of questions trhat everyone should be asking, since the answers could impact the election. I don't think that is unreasonable... or unwise.

We are about to cast our votes for the man who for all intents and purposes is going to be the most powerful man in the world for at least the next four years. I think we had better potential candidates than Kerry, but he is who we chose. That being the case, it is best to be aware of his liabilities early in the game.

I think people who push his military record are not thinking things through and may ultimately shoot us all in the foot. There are better and more important things to concentrate on.

I see you dissected my username... If you understand it, you will have a better idea of why I tend to concetrate on the military aspect of things.

18. It does happen.
I have never looked at the particulars of Kerry's Purple Heart Citations. That is why I asked. It became a matter of concern when I heard that Burkett was looking into it.

If everything was legit, that is a positive. If there are legitimate doubts, I think it is best if the questions came from inside, rather than outside.

I know it is small consolation, but I too knew some who "forgot to duck". If our places were reversed, THEY would not hesitate to use the same phrase (at least I hope not).

You are trying to raise concerns where there seem to be none.

Edit to add: the cook tripping and getting eggshell in his eye, then being cited for it is also an urban legend. Puleese.

33. I have a friend who got a purple heart in a freak accident in Viet Nam
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 10:49 PM by SoCalDem
He was really hurt , but it was very funny... He was embarrassed to tell people what happened..

They had a "camp" dog, and he was throwing a stick for the dog to fetch, he backed up and fell over his rifle which had been leaned against something..

It discharged and got him in the left butt-cheek.. Luckily he was not seriously injured, and he went on to finish 13 months there, but his parents alwways bragged about his purple heart, and he never did :)
