You know, there's a fine line between coffee geekdom and coffee nerdom

Brett Hanson obliterates that line. Once you get your coffee basics down (proportion, grind, water, and freshness), the next big step towards quality is using the same amount of coffee and water each time you brew. Consistently using the same amount of coffee and water will not only make your coffee repeatable, it also locks down those parameters so you can experiment with more wily others like grind.

1. I have a Krups combo espresso/coffee machine...
...every morning I fill the pot up to the "6 cup" water line. I take 3 scoops of fresh beans (Starbuck's French Roast) and grind them. That's my daily drill. I try to use spring water but where I live, the tap water's not half bad. That "6 cup" measurement actually yields two cups for me as I use the stainless steel travel / car mug.

So every day my coffee tastes exactly the way I want it to taste. And that's where my nerddom ends. I don't care about how coffee is grown, where it is grown. I just need it to be there in the morning so I can drink it.

2. wow, that seems a bit obsessive...
for me, it's more about the different varieties of coffee, not the brewing complexities.
