Yeah I know there was that horrible movie with Will Smith. Scientology and Coke will lead you to make travesties like that.

HOWEVER -

What if they did it right? Just go full-out steampunk. Give them every technology we have today, but steam powered (hence the 'steampunk' genre) versions of it.

It might look kind of like this:

1. 95% of what made the original show special was Robert Conrad's "chip on the shoulder" attitude
It really was "frontier James Bond."

So regardless of special effects / technology / gadgets / etc., I'd want to see an "attitude" actor in the role, a prick...like Conrad.

The right actor and the right script could really be amazing.

Will Smith and Kevin Kline were not the right actors.

I see this in the same light as the Christian Bale "dark" relaunch of the Batman franchise after progressively embarrassing Joel Schumaker "cartoon" messes like the Clooney / Schwarzenegger flick.

James West was a lethal smartass, just as the Sean Connery James Bond was a lethal smartass. Forget that and they might as well forget the remake.

4. Ah, but who could be his Artemis Gordon? Doesn't work for me.
Maybe Johnny Depp as Artemis and some more straight laced actor as Jim West? Depp could have a wonderful time with the disguises - Ross Martin did. Why waste Depp's comedic talent on a character as boring as Jim West?
